ear yeast - Miconazole-Dex drops

My FIV+ kitty had an ear infection when I adopted him. That seems to have cleared up, but he still favored the ear. The vet did a swab/slide and said it was yeast and prescribed the Miconazole-Dex drops for 10 days. And that it would be a reoccurring/ongoing issue probably with his ear.

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to combat this issue. And/or experience with these Miconazole-Dex drops. My kitty has one ear all curled up due to his days on the street. This is the ear that has the problem with yeast.

Get a second opinion... yeast can often be controled by a little to no grain / starch diet... You need a good vet and preferably one with good working knowledge of FIV

hmm...well, I'm not sure what to do on this one. And this is the same vet that has recommended I have my cat's broken and reabsorbing teeth removed. So I'm not sure. The clinic has experience with FIV cats.

I could go back to the other vet, which I really liked their beside manner more. But that vet just told me (about the cat's teeth) that "he can chew". He diagnosed the ear as an infection and we went through a course of drops and antibiotics but the bothersome ear remained an issue for my kitty.

I'm just not sure which of these vets knows what they're doing! I've gotten two very different opinions here. On both the teeth and the ear.
