Cat / Houseplant Issue

With the cooler nights I've been moving houseplants that summered outdoors into the greenhouse and house. On Friday we moved my big red spot banana (about 7 feet tall) into the great room.

Domino, 10 months old, is climbing the biggest culm up to where the leaves start. He's also kicking soil onto the floor which is fortunately wood and not carpeted.

On the theory that cats don't like the smell of citrus I cut the rind off a navel orange and put strips on top of the soil. Forget about it, he kicks the orange rind out along with the soil.

Yes, I had the banana last December when we adopted Domino and Mr. Poe. But they were only a couple of months old and didn't bother the plants, which went outdoors at tomato planting time in the Spring.

All I can think of is a "fence" of chicken wire around the bottom few feet of the banana. And the other large plants that come into the house. Which is hardly going to look attractive.

Suggestions? Please, I need your help!

Now is the problem the cats climbing the banana plant or kicking out the soil? If it is climbing the plant I have no suggestions .

But for kicking out the soil you could put tooth picks or wood skewer sticks throwout the soil. That is not a very attractive solution, IMHO. But that is the only other suggestion I have besides the chicken wire you mentioned.

Those two are now really at the hoodlum stage. It will get better.

I've put large decorative stones (river rocks) on top of soil in pots to keep cats from digging in the soil. I've also made a strong Tabasco and water solution and spayed plant leaves with it to keep a cat from chewing on leaves. These things have worked for me.

For the climbing of stems, you could wrap the stems with Sticky Paws double sided tape for a while. I've had great success with that stuff in training all my current cats (including “The Fog Ghost “) to not claw furniture. It took 2-4 months though, and it's not attractive either.

You have a greenhouse! How wonderful! I'm jealous.
