AWwwwe! No don't put him down! That's crazy! He doesn't know he can't see as he doesn't know what seeing IS. I read once of a Cat called Twizzler that was taken in as a kitten and was born WITHOUT eyes....the couple took him to a shelter after they found him but after they learned that he would definitely be put down bc he was blind, took him as their own. What is amusing is his ability to hear insects & mice in their house and eliminate or scare them off. He can traverse through without any problems as long as he knows where his food & water & litter box is. He actually dives mid-air to capture the flies that happenstance in! What a boy! So what I am saying is---Keep Him! He will be a JOY to your family. Cats sense of smell is 30x more than ours..and they hear ultr-sonic waves (insects & other hi-pitched things). Their sight is actually really limited to Blue, Green, & Yellow only.  Red registers as a dark gray with either blue or darkish yellow depending on the hue. They don't get crazy unless the item visually featured is in motion anyway.  Otherwise they could care less.

So PLEASE please keep him as is! He is too Cool!

ThankYou for listening!

Aw, I'm sorry you didn't take the time to read the thread. All is well! The original poster started this thread in September last year. They decided to have the surgery done to remove both eyes. In February of this year, an update with beautiful pictures was posted, and kitty is doing GREAT, looking WONDERFUL, and is very alive, well, and happy. :)

sadly I am allergic to cats so I am not able to take any cats home. this makes for a tough time because my neighbors feed cats, I think they started out with one or two and then as they fed them other Farrell cats joined in. well there is a mother cat with three kittens, two of them are in great condition but one of them was very skinny so one day I went out side and found the skinny one trapped in the corner of our yard(in that corner there is a wall made out of rubbish). when I got a closer look I realized the kitten had yellowish goo surrounding

its eyes, an even closer look confirmed that it infact was missing an eye ball( the other eye was gooed shut so I had no idea if that one had an eye ball).      when you respond I would like to avoid unuseful comments so remember I have an allergy to cat hair and am only 15

thank you

To the original poster, oh my gosh, I'm so glad that you found him and that he's doing well. Did you notify the police and/or local SPCA that you found an animal taped in a box? Some people... well...

Anyway what a great job you're doing with helping this kitty live a good life.

To 'Allergic', you could try calling your local SPCA, animal shelter and/or looking up groups that help cats in your area and asking for help or advice. Of course if you know of anyone personally who could help you, that's great too. Please try to get someone to get the cat medical attention somehow.

Unfortunately the cats will keep breeding if they aren't spayed and neutered, so that's something else you can try to find help with through SPCA, the local shelter, and local rescues and groups you may find online. There's something called 'trap neuter release', and there may be low cost spay/neuter programs in your area.

Allergic, you might get more responses if you start a new thread. Good luck!

Hi, I found my cat and he also has no eyes. He also had a bunch of other ailments too he had worms, ring worm.....anyway i took him vet and he has gotten over everything...he still has no eyes and the problem i find isnt his quality of life because he is blind, my problems lie in the fact that his eyes are constantly getting infected because they are like open holes. Anyway I have been told that when he is a bit older, we can perform surgery to close his eyes permanently. he is the happiest and the most LOVING cat, he appreciates me and is so affectionate. If he's not in pain, then keep him, he will thank you for it with much love. love is blind.....

Welcome to TCS!! This is an older thread and please feel free, if you want, to start up a new thread in your cat's honor here in the Health Forum. It is easy and you just go to the top of this page and click on "Start a New Thread", type in the title you want and then your post.

Your cat must be very lucky to have found you and you took him in. It does sound like he is quite sick with the Herpes virus. Did the vet give you antibiotics to give to your cat? Definitely would want to start that and add in some eye ointment/drops. A warm compress on the eyes daily to help gently clean them. I am so sorry your cat is ill and I do hope that the vet is treating your cat with some medications. It is obvious that you love him :heart3: and want to make him comfortable. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

The kitten does not have to be put down just because it has no eyes,I had found a kitten and when I had cleaned the eyes one was bulging real bad and the other was cloudy,so I took him to the vet to try and save his eyes with antibiotics being put in them, then had to sew the eyes shut with an injection antibiotic, and when got the stiches out the bulging eye had ruptured and the other one was starting to do the same.so I had taken him back to have his eyes removed just a few days ago and he is doing real well with getting around you just can't move your furniture around and you need to show it where it's food, water and litter pan is..and any stairs you might want to block off so it won't fall ,you would not believe how well they adapt.,I had people tell me I should have my kitten put down because of the eyes but that is like saying your going to kill a human because they are blind.and like the vet told me the kitty just needs alot of TLC.

Your story has brought tears to my eyes and how wonderful you didn't do as your vet suggested and have him put to sleep. He looks so wonderful now and it's all down to you. Well done and there should be more cat owners like you x

he is not going to have any quality of life.it's hard enough for human to be blind, to be extremely disabled as a cat, is horrible. You might want to take him to a vet and be merciful. I really think that would be the best thing for the Kitty. I'm sorry both you and the Kitty had to go through this. Life is cruel.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. It's absolutely horrible that somebody put a kitten inside a box! Your vet is the best person to help you with this kitten. Make sure he is separated from any other cats in the household. A bulging eye is a medical emergency and needs to be treated immediately! Cats can adjust just fine to life being blind. But, because of the severity of his illness and his very young age, euthanasia might be the best option. It might be the kindest thing to do. I know it's hard, but euthanasia is the kindest thing you can do when an animal is suffering. I think it would be best to put him down. Being blind and sick and so very young is causing him major suffering.

All I can say is I am so happy you realized this kitty was more than just his eyes and had faith enough to give him this chance. You are a kind-hearted person, and your kitties are adorable :-)

Well, I'm glad you didn't euthanize him. I would have.

Everyone should read the WHOLE thread. The cat is thriving and having a full life regardless of having no sight. It would be silly to put down a cat just because it's blind... Would you "put down" a blind human being? No, they are still entitled to a happy and long life. The owner is doing a wonderful job and her cat even has a buddy to depend on.
