So for the 2nd day in a row cynder has waited until i have gotten home from work to go pee in the litter box. I feel this isn't healthy as holding it is not good. Is this normal or should I be concerned, we are talking like 7-8 hrs or longer before he will pee, and if its not normal how do I rectify this so he will go when we are out of the house for long periods of time.

There is absolutely no way to force your cat to pee.
They all have different schedules. Chumley pees twice a day.
His pees are huge, and he SHOULD go more frequently. He doesn't.
If she were uncomfortable, she'd go before you got home.

I do have to ask, how are you so sure he is not urinating when your not home? Is the litter box that dry when you come home? Does he literally race to the litter box when you come home?

? I agree there is no way to force a cat to urinate. But I have NEVER heard of or seen a normal healthy cat urinate only twice a day. I guess I will learned something new

I'm sure.
We rescued him last year. When he was separated from the gang here (we live in an RV and rented a trailer to get him socialized and used to living inside), he peed more frequently. But he's still a little nervous coming and going from the litter boxes. You can watch him checking out where everyone is (there are 7 other cats), eyeing the litter box, getting ready to head that direction... sometimes he'll quietly, cautiously walk over there and hop in. Other times he'll just straight out dash, poor guy! No one ambushes him, so I don't know why he's nervous about it.
But we live in a really small space LOL, the litter boxes are all up front in one area, and we work from home. So yes, I'm 100% sure he pees twice a day.
He was at the vet quite a bit there, because he was a mess when we rescued him, and he's got FIV, had issues with diarrhea, allergies and gingivitis. I discussed this peeing thing with her, because he'd been inside over here full time for three months by the time we first saw this particular vet that got him all fixed up. She told me not to worry about it, so long as he IS peeing.

I think cats have more willpower an some humans. Hopefully Cynder will come around.

If your cat is really holding/waiting to urinate that long, no it is not normal.
|
Of course, if you are ever worried, the best thing to do is ask your vet.

When we rescued our first two cats, we were at the vet all the time, and often as an "emergency" after hours.
We ended up getting to know our vet REALLY well, and bought him a lot of bottles of wine to make up for all the "emergencies" that ... well... weren't.
But we had peace of mind.

LDG as I said I have no hands on experience with a cat waiting like a dog to urinate till the owner comes home. But since you do I am sure you are correct.
But I have been around thousands of cats for extended periods of time and NEVER saw such an issue. That made me feel it is not "normal" at first.
However since your cat does that and it is clearly happening, then it clearly can be normal. I still do not think it is common however, IMHO.
Like I said you taught me something new
. I do have to ask is it common for a "normal" healthy cat to just urinate twice a day with the owner present, in your experience? It is clearly not common in my experience
.

I wasn't being critical of your answer. I haven't actually timed how often our kitties go pee, in general LOL, but seems to me it's somewhere between 6 and 8 hours. The amount of scooping I do makes me think each one pees 3-4 times a day. Chum is definitely not usual/normal/average, but because I know he's healthy, I know it's possible for a cat to go pee twice a day and be perfectly healthy.
If I hadn't seen Chum, I wouldn't have thought that it'd be OK (unless the cat was on medication or something).
Even so, 7-8 hours isn't abnormal, is it? We should start a "how many times a day does your cat pee?" poll.

I think the question was asked in relation to there being a problem though. In that sense, based on my experience, there probably is no problem and no reason to worry.

I don't know I just find it odd as it has only happened the past 2 days. I got home at 8pm the other night and hubby was working late too and its like cynder may be having anxiety issues about being left alone, yet yesterday hubby was home at normal time 3pm and i got home early and went to clean the litter box and there was nothing in it except poop. Then as soon as i was there cleaning it he went pee and it was a BIG pee!!! It's like he is waiting for mommy to come home and then to pee.. Weird just don't get it.

! If you are really worried about his urination habits you could just add a second litter box.Again that is just my two cents

either im going to add a second litter box or get a BIG tote and do that. I'm thinking you might be right about the clean part. The thing is where his litter box is there is not enough room for a second one and there is no other place around my pitiful apartment to put it. So maybe a bigger one will work..
What a picky kitty I have

I don't know if a cat's bladder is like ours where is we keep holding it we'll become continent.
LDG, obviously your cat has no tissues but I am wondering if a covered box for him would help him. Sounds like me cat who would rather be alone when doing his business. If he's anxious about going when the other cats are around, a covered box.may reduce this anxiety? Just a thought.

Aw, you're sweet.
He uses the covered litter box. It's getting to the box that's the issue for him. He was a feral kitty that had contact with friendly people (or so it seems to us). He'd clearly never lived inside before. That took some adjusting. Once he was comfortable inside, we slowly made introductions to our home. The small space and 7 other cats is just intimidating. He's not aggressive, and knows he's the "territory intruder." Billy (who was the 7th), had the same issue. Chumley's doing much better than he was, and is much more comfortable than he was. He'll get there.

FIV attacks the immune system. It wouldn't make any sense that it would affect how often he wants to pee (behavioral).
