Hi Everyone....

So hubby said we could get a fish, mind you i wanted a fish all along so started out by asking for a snake, then lizard, and finally I "settled" for a fish lol.

Anyway, we will be getting a beta I think..

Any experience, ideas, advice etc, I come to mind the scene from Lady and the tramp...

Thanks

Bettas are great fish to have, full of personality and colorful!

I used to breed them. I have several blue/green females looking for homes, lol.

They require at least 1 gal tank, heated to constant ~75-80º temp. Fed once or twice a day, few pellets (no flake!) and one fasting day a week. for a 1 gal tank, 100% water changes are needed 2-3x a week.

I always advise, go for a bigger tank. The bigger tank, the less water changes and cleaning required. Filters aren't required as they are weak swimmers and filter flow hinders their swimming abilities. I don't recommend air bubbles as the bubbles can get caught in their gills. They are air breathers anyway.

Females can be housed together, more than 4 at least. But with caution as they can fight. in at least a 10 gal tank with LOTS of hiding places and plants

For decorations.. silk plants over plastic (plastic can rip the fins).. and smooth gravel and rocks. I usually prefer bare bottoms or marbles as it's easier to clean than gravel.

With cats, make sure there's a secure, breathable lid on the tank. Mine enjoy watching them and really don't go after them (first few days they might be excited, but then they'll get bored!)

I love bettas used to have a ton of them. The male ones have the most beautiful fins. They are very pretty when they puff out at each other. Can't keep them in the same tank together. But you can put them in bowls next to each other. Or put a mirror in front of 1.

Those were some of mine. I miss having them. I don't trust Luna and (especially) Midnight.

So far everything is OK with Ranger (the betta)-- Bandit keeps looking and pawing but is quickly losing interest, smokie could care less!!

Pretty blue! I have a blue one too, and he's quite active. I'm so glad I got a betta as they're so beautiful and make a great addition to a peaceful tank. I have three now!

Bettas should NEVER be in anything less than 3 gallons, unfortunetly pet stores dont tell the right care, just like the "goldfish in a bowl" myth. I suggest going to ultimate bettas website that is the #1 betta care site around and they will answer any and every question possible about bettas, especially if your a first time owner. When properly kept they are awesome pets and can live up to 6 years!
