Litter box issue.

I know there are lots of these types of threads but this situation is a bit tricky and I don't know what to do..

Sami still has bouts of diarrhea and she doesn't always quite make it to the box and goes JUST outside of it. Its not always in the same spot though, sometimes its just off to the side. This isn't the problem though. The problem is that wherever she has an accident, Buddy will pee there.

First time was off to the right of the box. It was cleaned up and cleaned with the carpet cleaner as well. The next day, there was pee there on the floor. At first I was concerned there was something wrong with him but then I realized he ONLY does it when she does and in the same spot...

I put some cardboard down to catch any other accident she may have. Eventually she did have one on the cardboard just in front of the box. Before I even got to it, Buddy peed on it. (Yuck!)

So I went on a hunt to find a better solution. A small tarp. It is under the boxes and up the wall a bit (since sometimes Sami sticks her butt over the edge). Last night she had another accident on the tarp. It was cleaned and scrubbed really well. Today Buddy peed on that same spot on the tarp and did his best to pull the litter out of the box and onto the puddle.

I have no idea what to do here. I mean if she has an accident further from the box, say in the living room, is he going to pee there? Cleaning up diarrhea is bad enough but I don't have any enzyme cleaner at the moment, since I am flat broke and they are expensive, so if he does, he will keep going there. Should I be using an enzyme cleaner where she has accidents? Or is their urine different from their feces? This is getting frustrating.

All I can say is keep a black garbage bag under each litter box. So that way if your female cat has an accident and the male urinates over it you can clean it easily. Plus you can throw it out unlike the tarp.

I would also say see a veterinarian for a check up and maybe something to firm up her stools.

Lastly yes if your female cat has a bowel movement in the living room your male cat is likely to mark over it .

I cant use bags because Parker will shred it and pull it in the litter box. He LOVES plastic bags to drag in there.

Sami is on an enzyme powder for her pancreas but the diarrhea still comes back some times. The worst part is that it smells very, very bad on its own...the urine just tops it off.

Puppy pads? Or will he shred those, too?

He'd likely try to get those in the box too, especially since they are plastic on the bottom. The tarp is easy to clean but Buddy is still peeing on it. I watched him today and he went in the box, dug a hole and peed, so he is just trying to do it when no one is looking. I cleaned the tarp really well but I am thinking the scent must still be there. I really need an enzyme cleaner but I have a two week wait.

I had issues years ago with Duke, he was too big to fit into his litter box and in the end his 'end' would be on the outside when he went.

I ended up Getting a "Boda Dome" litter box that keeps everything on the inside. Also, I have a heavy duty piece of indoor outdoor carpeting under my litter boxes to keep accidents to a minimum. You can rinse it in the tub or outside with a hose.

Hope this helps
