When I went to the beach this weekend, there was a guy doing a sand sculpture. This guy is extremely talented.

A close up of the face.

Marvellous! My BIL is a wood sculturer and has worked in sand and ice as well as marble. These people are amazing.

My FIL (who passed in December) was a wood sculpturist and did the most amazing work. He took several Best of Show and first place ribbons when he showed his work. He did a lot of Santas and we have several of them. When we were there this past weekend, DH's mom told him to take one of his favorite pieces. DH chose this awesome whale. I believe it won first place, but I am not sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if my BIL wasn't a judge for your FIL's work. BIL often travels to the US to judge wood shows.

You should take a picture and post it for us. If you want to see my BIL's work, google him (neil cox or neil zaleski-cox) His website is out of date but you'll get an idea.

ETA: Here is a link to some of his work. http://www.zaleski.ca/neilz_c/woodcarving-gallery1.html

WOW !!! I have never seen anything even close to that. That is a firefighter, maybe in honor of 9/11. The sad thing though, is that it will get washed away, and is not permanent. I would want it to last forever. Very talented guy.

Neil did a statue of a firefighter being welcomed into heaven by Jesus. He did it on commission for a couple from NY city who had lost a son. It was to be presented one week after 9/11 so after the disaster they decided to hold off until later when it was unveiled in NYC in honour of all the firefighters who lost their lives in 9/11 as well. Most of us in the family have small versions of the original done in bronze. I don't know where in NYC the statue resides - I'll have to ask Neil.
