Dear the_food_lady, I know this post is quite old but I was wondering how the vet trip went. I have a very similar problem. I have 1 stictly indoor cat named JuJuBean. He started scratching when his brother died (Ozzy) and we thought it was stress, the vet did not seem worried. It began as ear scratching, followed by hair loss. No classic signs of mites, no smell, no black crude. I was using a shampoo and conditioner that seemed to help heal the scratch marks and regrow the hair. Today I came home to find him with watery eyes and hair loss above and below his eyes slightly swollen. He is also still itching at his ears. I also use febreeze and wondered if that was an issue with your cat? The only other thing I can think of is that we just started growing him cat grass on our balcony(third foor, he is also screened in, no contact with other animals) maybe hes allergic? I dont know, I just thought maybe you have a solution or an answer to what was wrong with your kittys since it sounds so familiar. I hope the vet dont find something horrible, hes the last kitty I have left. Its been a rough couple years with the loss of my 17 year old Patches and my other cay Ozzy who passed last year to the day.

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

AngelOz,
Has your cat seen a vet yet? If not he really should see one asap. It could be a number of things. It sounds like it could be ringworm which often affects the face and ears of cats. It could also be allergies or some other skin condition. Certain internal disorders can also cause skin symptoms so a check up is on order. If it is ringworm it's easily treated. It just takes a while. I prefer using Lyme Sulfur Dip as it's quick, only twice weekly treatments are needed and it's less stressful for the kitty than some other treatments. It's also pretty cheap. There are also creams you can use.
It doesn't sound like ear mites. If you suspect that the cat grass or the Febreeze it's a good idea to stop using both. If it's allergies it could be a number of things though. Either way a vet check up is needed asap. Kitty sounds very uncomfortable.
In the meantime you can use topical Benadryl on the itchy area to help the itching.
