How many meals a day?

I recently brought hoe a kitten, about 8 weeks old but small for her age, so far I have been feeding her 4 small meals a day, when I get up, lunch time, tea time, and and hour or 2 before I go to bed.

She only eats wet food as her teeth are still too small for dry ( my 7 month old eats a mix of wet when I feed the kitten and dry to graze on) I was just wondering if this was enough?

The 7 month old, Trixie, will often leave some of her wet food which the kitten, Pixie, happily eats once I'm sure Trixie is done with it.

I just want to know if I am feeding too often or not enough, Trixie has been on fry food since I brought her home so she is enjoying the change in food

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Wet food is great for cats ... I would leave that alone if you can afford a all wet diet... Many of us wish dry was never introduced to out cats

I think you're feeding often enough (four times a day is what I'd recommend for kittens); for quantity, however, you can give her as much as she wants.

And I am totally in Sharky's camp on the kibble issue; I, too, wish it were not an option for our cats! If your kitty likes the canned foods, I'd just keep right on feeding it to her and ditch the kibble entirely.

4 times sounds about good. My kitten is about the same age and she has dry available 24/7 and gets wet twice a day (morning and night) wish I could give her all canned but can't afford canned for two kitties right now.

Thanks for the advice, Trixie deffinattely prefers the wet so I may try swapping the bag of dry for some more wet

also I'm feeding the 7month old at the same time as the new edition but a little more, Is this too much for her or is it OK as she is still growing? She does leave it once shes had enough I'm just wondering if I'm feeding her too often?

Thanks again

I would think as long as she's eating enough to still maintain and grow that should be fine. My bigger kitty is older and I still was feeding her canned 3 times a day before she doesn't eat a lot in one meal so I have to give her smaller more frequent meals.

The general rule is that you really don't have to worry about overfeeding cats, just them eating too fast or too much in one sitting and throwing up.

So the more smaller meals the better, as they don't get into the super hungry "scarf and barf" routine.

What was recommended by experts I trust for that reason was to go ahead and leave dry out 24x7 for free feeding, and feed wet meals as often as you like.

So as kittens Wesley and Buttercup always had two bowls of dry food kept topped off, and were fed wet food 2-3 times a day depending on my schedule. Approaching adulthood we switched to a feeder ball which dispense dry food very slowly (toy with holes that they push around), and wet food twice a day. Now as adults, they get their dry from an autofeeder once a day and wet meals twice a day (except on vacation, twice dry and once wet so sitter only has to make one trip).
