fighting with neighbors cats

Can any please advise me what to do?
we have a four month old girl kitten called Socks over the last couple of days we have been letting her out into our back garden for short amounts of time to get her used to being outside.

Yesterday my neighbors cat which is fully grown and about 10 times the size of Socks came running out of my hedge and attacked her she banged her into my patio door and cornered her against the wall it really frightened me so i ran up the garden shouting at the big cat which ran anyway.

Socks was seemed ok she was hissing growling and spiting so i got down on the floor so she could see me until she calmed down, but now i am really scared about letting her out again. Should i keep her in until she is bigger or is there a way to stop this cat attacking her?
I have never owned a cat before so i am not sure what is normal cat behavior please help

Unfortunately this is what can happen when cats go outside, and that's the reason why mine have been indoors since they were kittens.

Is socks spayed?

Wow, Socks is a tough girl.
Your back garden is probably part of your neighbor's cat territory and it could be why Socks was bullied. If you still want her to go outside, I suggest you do not leave her unsupervised until she is bigger. Have her spayed asap. Advise your neighbor that you have a cat and hopefully your neighbor will discourage his kitty from going to your garden. In my experience though, cats decide between themselves and this can lead to cat fights. The result could be either Socks submitting and letting your neighbor's cat enter your garden or Socks "owning" the area.

In general they will work it out. If you are very concerned just stay outside so you can best monitor the situation. But as long as neither cat is bleeding or injured all should be fine.

Yayi very good post! To the OP I would agree with all there information .
