We have two cats, Prometheus (5) and Battle Cat (4). Both are from the same mother, one litter off. They always get along; eat together, sleep together, wash each other, etc. Until a dog shows up...
We let the cats out from time to time. Three times in the past year dogs have ran into our yard with them out. The dogs are always friendly, but scare the cats a lot. They hiss, growl and get angry... at each other! We remove them from the situation, but for the next week they attack each other viciously. It happened again this past weekend. My wife has a wound that may require stitches in her leg from trying to break them up. Why does this happen?
We usually have to separate them for the next few days, but even then they growl and hiss at each other, often getting to the point of vicious wounds. We've bought some "calming spray" stuff and plugged that in, but it doesn't really help. They are usually back to "normal" in a week or so, but is there anyway we can try to prevent this? (other then never letting them out of the house) Why do they fight one another?
