Feeling unwell after vaccinations

Thread Starter
Our 9 week old kitten Molly had her vaccinations this morning.
We expected her to be quite lethargic after, which she is, but she's also crying if anyone goes near her.
We've called the vets, and they will see her again this afternoon, to check on her.
Is this normal?
When will she feel better?
I hate that something we've done has made her feel rubbish, even if it is to protect her in the long run.

It might just be because she's feeling unwell with her shots

What's Molly like if you pick her up to try and soothe her?

She doesn't want to be touched.
She's back at the vets now, (my b/f has taken her) she has a bit of a temperature.
My poor baby.

The vet want to give her a very small dose of metacam. I am not happy about that at all, I'm sure she's too small for such a strong drug.

Have you googled the question?. What's Metacam, an antibiotic?

The Swedish medicinal-handbook says not to kittens under 6 weeks.

so it seems to be a reasonable try to lessen her sufferings. Although I agree with you Jessy, not without some risks...

Had you googled it on your own, or shall I try to translate?

Good luck!

When you get a vaccination, your body has to mount an immune response to create the antibodies that are so useful to protect you against the disease in the future. And that immune response includes lots of the symptoms of sickness--fever, tiredness, soreness at the injection site. I'm willing to bet that it's your kitten's own immune system that's making her feel so bad. I bet she still hurts where they gave the injection, and doesn't want anybody to pick her up because they might touch the sore spot. An anti-inflammatory drug is the usual response because it damps down the inflammatory response (swelling, fever, etc.) a little. If you're human, acetaminophen works (but of course human medication would be a bad, bad idea for cats!).

I had a fever last time I got a tetanus shot, and was tired for two days. That is normal. But good on you for taking her to the vet. She is a nine-week-old kitten, after all, and you really can't be too safe when they are that tiny.

Thank you, she had the dose of metacam that the vet recommended, after she'd had some food, and she's snuggled up with me now :-) she's still sleepy, but she's been chasing Roxy again, which is good! X

When Rosie had a URI a few months ago, she was given an anti-inflammatory shot and the vet said it would hurt her and it did

I'm pleased to hear Molly's perked up a bit though
