Luna doesnt like to wear her collar.

She has a normal safety-cat collar with just her id tag. I haven't even put her rabies tag on it because it makes too much noise and I think that would bother her more. It's not too tight. She scratches and scratches and tries to bite it or bat at it. She meows like she is not happy until I take it off. The edges do feel scratchey to me but I thought with her fur she wouldn't notice. Maybe I need to buy a softer collar. What kind of collar should I get based on your experience?

Thanks in advance!

Let me start off by saying only my strictly indoor cats wear collars. My two indoor/outdoor cats do not. So I do not use a safety collar. I feel my cats are fairly safe in my home. But more importantly if they ever got outside I would want people to know these cats where owned.

Since Panda the DLH is very nervous and most likely would hide from a stranger and might seem feral if outside. l want people to know she is a pet. Loki the F3 Savannah would run down the middle of the road like a dog (he has done this before that is why he is a "house cat") and I want people to see he is owned. So I am afraid they both would lose a break away collar for different reasons.

Neither of my completely indoor cats like there collar and tags. They have just learned to tolerate them. In the beginning they would scratch, bite, and claw them. But with time they get used to them.

But when I take the collars off for forty eight hours when I apply the flea medication and go to put them back on the cats they go threw the above every time . They need to get used to the collar again in other words .

Lastly if you want to buy a softer collar that is fine. I am not sure it will help though .

Hope that made sense and if you need any clarification feel free to ask .

Give Beastie Bands a try, might be just what you need.

Of our 3 cats -- Angel has no trouble at all with her collar. In fact if it ever opens up she seems upset until I put it back on her - she feels "undressed"

Tony won't wear a collar. First time I put it on him he hid in a closet and wouldn't come out until I took it off. So much for collars for Tony.

Tippy wore her collar (with the id tag) for 2 or 3 years with no problem. The collar got kind of beat up and I bought her a brand new one. She immediately figured out just how to take it off. Thought the collar was defective so I got her another one --- same story --- she delights in opening it up. She left it outside our bedroom door, on a chair, on the couch --- just like she was saying "see what I can do?" Anyway, I've given up on collars for her. I occasionally put it back on but she'll leave it for a day or two and then the same story.

So I guess it's just a matter of each cat's likes and dislikes.

After Hannah managed to get her lower jaw stuck in her collar, I decided on no more collars for my indoor only kitties.

Funny I've got a Luna that doesn't like to wear her collar either

Lynxx was the only 1 that never fought wearing his collar. I just keep trying with Luna and Midnight. Right now I've got just the collar on them, no tags yet. I'm going to see if I can get them used to that for now. Then in a couple of weeks I'll attach their tags. So far it's not working. Midnight manages to not only get his own collar off, but Luna's as well.

I've been using the break aways from Pet Smart and Petco.

Thanks everyone! It's good to hear others' experiences, good and bad.

My Luna is mostly indoors but sometimes she slips out when I let the dogs out. So far I am always able to catch her because she stops as soon as she gets to the grass, she seems surprised to feel the grass under her feet. I am worried some day she will be brave enough to jump the fence.

I actually do have one of those Beastie Bands. I forgot I bought that a few months ago but she was still a kitten so it was way too big. At 1 year old I think she's as big as she's going to get so I may cut it down to size and see how it goes.

Monet always manages to get his collar off. Picasso doesn't mind wearing her's. I think it's also best to start collars on kittens so they are used to it quicker. I didn't give Monet his first collar until he was over a year old and he hates it.
