Getting another cat

Hi Folks, I have a situation that I think some of you have been in but I don't know how to handle it.

My fiancee and I split up and she took her two cats and I got to keep Ella because she didn't really like my fiancee. Ella is about 1 1/2 to 2 years old. We got her from a rescue drive a few months(her story was so sad we just couldn't leave her there) before we split. The other cats didn't like her because they had been living with my fiancee for the last 6 years and with the both of us for 6 months.

Anyway now that the other cats and my fiancee are gone I've noticed that she's been rather sad. It's been about 3 weeks since we split up and my ex just got all of her stuff out of my house. I understand that it's going to take some time for Ella to adjust but I was wondering how long.

Also, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get another cat for her to play with while I'm at work. I'm gone up to 10 hours a day so I figured she gets lonely. Now I can't get one right away, but I was thinking I could afford one sometime mid October. I plan on getting a rescue again and I was wondering if I should get a male or female and what age I should get. Also I was wondering if they should be of comparable sizes. Ella isn't tiny but she's no bruiser either.

Thanks for the help.

Much Love,

Shaggy

I think that if you can afford it, then definitely yes! Be sure to separate them initially, and to introduce them slowly under your supervision. They will probably get hissy at each other for a few days; but after that, they should settle in and be friends and companions. Good luck!

A lot of rescues will let you foster a cat or dog. It can be sort of a trial period to make sure the animal is a good fit for you household. It's also a good idea when considering a new addition to the household to talk with someone who knows the animal or may have fostered it. That's how I found Rasta. I fostered her for two months to make sure she could get along with my other cat Ricky and they do fine She lets him be alpha cat. Another cat I took over the alpha cat role which he didn't like like and fought at first. If you give them enough time though and introduce them slowly most cats will eventually get along. It take some longer than others and can take a week to several months. Cats require patience.
