I took in this stray kitty 2 weeks ago...and on occasion, it's hard to wake her up. I mean HARD!!! I pick her up and shake her a bit but she flops like shes dead...for at least 30 seconds. The first time this happened I FREAKED OUT!! When this occasionally happens, I shake her body, yell in her ear, pick her up and shake her, and NOTHING!! Suddenly she will wake up and look at me like, what the heck is your problem dude!! Is this normal??...I want to take her to the vet, but my building does not allow pets. And I had to sneak her past security, in a duffle bag, at night, when management is not here, but most vets are closed by the time they leave. I really want to keep this kitty, I already adore her, and I won't give her up..Anyone know how to sneak a kitty out of an apartment building during the day, and are her sleeping habits normal??? Thanks a bunch!!

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

There are two different issues.
One is generally lethargic behavior, which can be a sign of various illnesses. Its not unusual for cats to sleep 12-16hrs a day though, so its important to keep that in mind, but they should have periods of high activity too.
The other is just a cat entering a very deep sleep.
Due to risk of predators, most cats are only napping when they appear to be sleeping, and the smallest noise can wake them. You'll see that even during this sleep, their ears are still rotating.
Cats will have periods of deep REM sleep, but like us all cats are individuals so how deep this is varies, and I have certainly heard of kitties that were totally unresponsive to most stimulus in this deep sleep. So in and of itself, that would not worry me.

Our cat Cleo used to do this. But, she would find a hiding spot and go off into one of those sleeps and I would spend an eternity looking for her because she wouldn't wake up and her hiding spot was really good.
I did notice one thing in your post though, you let him outside but he isn't neutered....how is the stray population there? I grew up in Western KY and I know there's an abundance of strays and farm cats, please be careful letting him out unneutered, he will be a daddy multiple times over and will only add to the unwanted cat population. And not being neutered, he is more apt to get in territorial fights, which could end badly for him.

Both of my cats are like that. Sometimes we laugh cause we can pick up their paws and stuff and they just sleep on like nothing's going on. For the most part cats sleep very lightly (for their protection from predators). It could be possible that you have raised your cat in a very positive and peaceful environment, so he has the luxury of getting a good deep sleep without having to worry. I freaked out one night when I had a hard time waking my cat, only to have him wake up and give me that look "what are you doing dude? i had a good sleep going there". Sometimes i can tell when their dreaming, I can see their paws moving and they make little noises, guess their dreaming about chasing something out in the wild.
