Cat Peeing problems

My Cat is peeing and defecating outside the litterbox. I took her to the vet and he gave her a shot of antibiotic. She had a UTI infection. I bought her a new litter box which is lower than the larger hooded box she has. I still have the larger box which I keep in a side closet. I have added the new box in a new location in the kitchen. Her food is also in the kitchen but in a different place. I use scented tidy cat scoopable litter. She still is not using either box. I just changed to unscented litter this evening. I hope she starts using the box. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Todd

Hi Todd & Welcome to TCS!

You have already covered a few of the things I normally suggest. You may consider looking into Cat Attract litter. You may need to confine your kitty to a small room until she gets "re-trained" to the cat box.

One more thing to consider.....was a urinalysis done to determine if there was blood, bacteria, or crystals in the urine? Sometimes the infection doesn't respond to a certain antibiotic, or else it requires more than one round of antibiotics. If there were crystals in the urine then a prescription diet is often required to dissolve them. So many things to consider!

I have a few suggestions, hope some help you. First I would recommend that you get a product called Cat Attract Litter. Here is the product: http://preciouscat.com/precious-attract-p-5.html. This litter helps attract cats to the litter box.

I would also recommend you keep the cat in a dog crate with a litter box, water, food and towel. I would do this for two weeks to get her used to using the litter box again. Once she has been using the litter box consistently for two weeks in the crate then confine her to a small room like a bathroom. Once she is using the litter box consistently in the confined area for two weeks you can reintroduce her to your home.

If she has any accidents just go back to the last "stage" and try again.

Hope that was somewhat helpful.

Thanks for the tips. I did take her to the vet and they initially gave her a injection antibiotic but the infection was immune to it so they put her on a pill antibiotic Zeniquin. The lab results showed this might be effective against this bacteria. We have also cordined off a section of the apt so she is limited to the area she can go in. She has used the litter box some but still has had some accidents. We think it is because she still smells the old urine spots on the carpet. We are trying to get rid of the smell using white vinegar -water -peroxide solution. We read something on the internet that this works. Is that right?

Thanks,

T.

I have never used the vinegar, water, and peroxide solution. So I have no idea if it works. I would recommend Simple green: http://www.simplegreen.com/ or Nature's Miracle:http://www.ilovenaturesmiracle.com/home/index.php.

As far as the accidents go is she having them incandescently or is she having them on the soiled carpet area's? I would recomend you keep her off the carpeted/upholstered area's if possible until she is back to using the litter box.

Lastly I hope the new antibiotic works. If you want to tell me the name of the bacteria she has I can check possible antibiotics that might help her.

Yes,

I will find out what bacteria it was and let you know. She is using her boxes more. We have cordoned off her from the areas she has soiled. Thanks for the help.
