I take my two cats outside into the backyard 3 - 4 times a week for 15 - 20 minutes each time. I have been taking my 2 year old cat out for a few months now, and over the past couple weeks my 1 year old scaredy cat has started going outside for some playtime. I have some questions about the behavior these two exhibit while they are outside, and the behavior the older one exhibits when I try to get him back inside.
First, my 2 year old LOVES being outside and will chase bugs, birds, and dog fur clumps (my landlady brushes her insanely furry dog back there) for as long as I let him. He's extra sweet when we're outside, enjoys being pet when he is outside even more than when he is inside, and he will run after me if I start walking somewhere. However, the second I pick him up to bring him back inside, he starts hissing. He's not violent in anyway at all during this, but he will give me a good, long hiss every few seconds until I deposit him back inside my apartment. He also makes a mumbling, pathetic sound that is similar to the pathetic meow he gives me when he wants to go outside. When I say pathetic, I mean it sounds exactly like a five year old child saying "but moooooooooommmmm...." when he wants something really bad. That is the most annoying thing he does. Sometimes I have to close the back window because he will get himself so excited to go outside that I don't get a moment's peace.
Also, when I have both cats outside, they act completely different toward each other compared to how they act inside. It is pretty much guaranteed one or both of them will have a puffy tail at some point when they're both outside. For the most part, they stick to opposite sides of the smallish backyard (about 40' x 40'), which is already strange because they absolutely love each other. It's usually when they both go exploring the gate leading into the back alley that they get defensive and the fur starts puffing out. My 1 year old even started hissing at me and my other cat when he got especially riled up by this the first time it happened. I've only ever heard him hiss once before that, and that was when we had my friend's cat staying with us (in my roommate's room with the door closed) while my friend had her apartment fixed.
Oh, and there is one issue specific to my 1 year old. Whenever I have him outside, he makes a b-line for the tastiest looking grass and starts munching. I brought home some cat grass months ago and he wouldn't even look at it, but he is perfectly content to munch grass for the entire time we're outside sometimes.
