new cat causes problems between 2 old cats

I am a new member with a cat crisis...
My daughter recently adopted a kitten (5 months old) from the local shelter and since she is in grad school we wanted to make sure that Noah would have a good relationship with my two cats so he can stay with us should she need to leave him for a bit.
I have two female cats: Mea and Dude, both 4 years old and both neutered.
Once Noah came (he is staying in the guest room) Mea's behavior towards Dude changed drastically: she now seems no longer to recognize Dude as her pal. Mea hisses and growls at Dude and Dude is now responding by attacking Mea. Since neither is declawed, Mea now sports scabs on her face. I fear that Dude might seriously injure Mea and this worries me terribly.

Mea is a longhaired mix cat we got from PetFinders.com. She gets first dibs at the food but I sense that Dude just allows her to be 'top dog'. Dude is a rescue that we bottle-fed. She is a shy, tough kitty, but thus far has enjoyed being groomed by Mea and they have always been friends... until now.

Noah will be going to his new home in Providence next week, but whenever my daughter visits in the future, Noah will be coming along too.

I hope some cat lover out there can help me find a way to wind the clock back on the relationship between Mea and Dude, and maybe suggest something I may do to make Noah's next visit less stressful for us all.

Very gratefully!!!!

Hi Jen - Welcome to TCS!

First, congratulations on rescuing your two cats, as well as to your daughter for adopting Noah. Looks like good hearts run in the family.

If you've scanned through some of the threads in this forum, you've seen that other members are having similar concerns (see "Friendly Cats Now Fighting - Please Help by MrAMF).

Read that thread for some suggestions. Using a dab of vanilla on all the cats under their chins or the back of the neck (so that they smell the same and become more familiar to each other) can help. Feliway diffusers (they plug in to an outlet) have a calming effect on many cats and can ease the introduction.

Your situation with Noah is trickier than usual, because he will not be permanently living with you. It will be more difficult for your cats to learn to accept him if he is not often there. I think your cats will revert to their usual behavior once Noah goes home with your daughter, but unfortunately, you may see the discord recur between your cats when he returns.

I hope that for now, the Feliway will help (available at large pet supply stores like PetSmart, Pet Goods, etc.) And of course, make sure everyone's nails are trimmed so no one gets hurt. Pay lots of attention to your girls and try not to let them see (or hear) you with Noah at this point.

I hope other members will have more suggestions for you. I know this is distressing for you and the kitties, and I hope your cats will calm down once a little more time goes by.
