I am leaving tomorrow about 2 hours away to help my mom move on Friday. I am going to be staying at my sisters, and I am taking Phaedra with me because I don't trust my roommates to take care of her while I am gone until Saturday, and I don't want to have to ask them to do that anyways. She does not have her first rabies vaccine yet, and was wondering if I should get it before we go or if I should just wait until we get back to get it.. I don't know if her being a little stressed out because of a new place could make her sick from it or if getting it would be safer because they do have a cat, but she won't come in contact with the cat.. but they also used to have a dog living there.

Long story short: just wondering if I should get her rabies vaccine before we go stay at my sister's who owns a cat or if I should wait until we get back.

For anyone wondering, I have to get it regardless because it's the law here.

Hi, FleshFlowers!

I would lean towards getting the shot upon your return. The chances of your cat coming into contact with rabies via the other two animals is, I think, lower than the chance Phaedra's stress makes any side effects from the shot worse. I would wait until you get home and things are calm again.

Good luck with all that moving and stuff. Hope everything goes smoothly!

She should be fine until you get home. I think that many cats are more stressed by the shots and its better to just wait. I made the mistake of having a series of shots done on one of our cats and she was a mess the entire time we moved. The others breezed right through things. I think she simply did not feel well and the stress of that and moving was just over the top.

Good luck and hope the move goes well

Do the other animals your cat will have contact with have a rabies vaccine? Is the other cat she will have contact with a indoor/outdoor cat? If the other animals do not have a rabies vaccine or the other cat is an indoor/outdoor cat I would recommend you get the rabies vaccine.

If the cat is indoor only and the other animals your cat will have contact with have the rabies vaccine then it can wait.

Just my opinion, do whatever you feel is best for your cat.
