Can anyone recommend a good, healthy supplement/treat/food to give my cats for hairball treatment/preventative? preferably supplement?

Monet had a hairball the other day, and I'd like to supplement their food to try to prevent further hairballs.

please and thank you

OH HAIRBALLS
. Vaseline!! It's easy and cheap. But you can't overuse it as it coats the intestinal tract and blocks absorbtion of nutrients. I started my cats three times a week in the beginning and went to once a week now. 1/2 tsp. Most of my cats will just lick it off my finger. I have gotten lazy about it lately, but will probably start up again due to Fall shedding season. Carolina also mentioned to me in the past to try the Temptation Hairball treats. Ten a day for a few days and then I give twice a week. The cats LOVE them and are now expecting them ALL the time
. Good luck and I am sure other's will have some suggestions too.

There are two schools of thought:
1) Increase fiber intake so the hairball can more easily pass with the roughage. Pumpkin is a healthy one that can be added to wet food.
2) Provide a laxative every once in a while or just when you notice dry-hacking, which is what we do. These are just flavored petroleum jelly.

And of course furminators/lint rolling/brushing etc are preventative measures.

I'd just brush more, ensure food is good, and give em a little flavored PJ which they should enjoy as a treat if you notice heaving.

thanks for the responses!

I brush every day, and furminate every other or so.
I feed them Soulistic chicken with pumpkin.. is that enough.. pumpkin-wise?

PetSmart carries a GNC brand hairball remedy that I like. It's not petroleum based...I think it's a vegetable oil base...and it has fiber added. It works great for Tailer, who's a little older and could use some extra fiber. The down side is that the cats don't seem to like it...not a big deal with Tailer, who hates any hairball meds, but it's inconvenient for Forest, who will eat the petroleum stuff straight from the tube.

I got one of these from PetSmart for Freya - the hacking had become a nightly ritual. She doesn't mind it as a treat, but I've noticed I can hide it in her food and she doesn't see bothered.
