ktten opened one eye at a few hours old

Hi all

My cat has just gave birth to 3 healthy kittens. She gave birth in a cupboard under our stairs at some point today but the delivery was not seen due to her abandoning the birthing box we had put together for her so it could have been anytime between early hours of this morning and 8.30 tonight when we finally found her The kittens all seem fine except one of hem seems to be opening and shutting just one eye quite comfortably :s Is this normal? This is her second litter as her first one some time ago resulted in one stillborn, one ktten that died only a few hours old of what the vet said was due to it having fluid oin its lungs and the 3rd one lived to a week and then died which i think was because she was very unsetteled with the litter and kept abandoning the kitten but i definatly did not see any of them open an eye. Also, with her last litter, there was a 48 hour gap between the 2nd and 3rd kitten so i am wondering how you can tell if there are any more kittens in there as her abdomon still feels really swollen but im not sure if this is normal aswell as last time she was expecting im sure she felt really slim again after having the last kitten. Finally, one of the kittens is much smaller then the other two, only 80g where as the other 2 are 90g and 95g and he seems to be crying alot more then the other 2. Could it be that he is not getting enough milk? Mummy cat is being great with them and every time the little one crys she licks him and turns a bit as if trying to help him but he still crys I have seen him latch on so know he can but am wondering why he seems so restless compared to the other two? Any advice would be appriciated as i am new to this forum and would rather get advice now then have to wait to see the vet Thanks

May I ask why you bred her again when the first litter ended in disaster? Is the sire same as before? How long do you keep her with the stud when you mate them?
Sounds like you might have kept them together way too long and the kittens are different age, which leads to problems, specially for the younger ones who might be stillborn or not fully developed (could be the case in the first and 2nd litter). That would also explain why one of the kittens already opened his eye. He could be older than the others. Keep them in a dim light until the others open their eyes too, in case the eyes aren't 'ready' yet, so they don't get damaged due to too bright light.

What breed is in question? Depending of that, the size of the kittens seems quite ok, but if the weight of the smallest kitty doesn't rise as well as the other two you may have to bottle feed him.

Hey

Thanks for your reply and sorry i took so long to gey back to you. I decided to breed her again as i discussed it with the vet and he said that it could have been just a really unfortunate situation and does not mean her other litters would end up the same way. Her first litter was by a different sire. The current sire was our other cat therefore i found it really hard to controll when and where they mate which i didnt realise could cause problems like this Luckily now all 3 kittens, whom are all boys, are thriving really well. The smallest needed to be bottle fed at first as his two much larger and greedier siblings were hogging the milk supply and kept pushing him off the nipple. The vet said not to worry about his eye but he didnt explain why he had it open. Thanks for that information, ill take that on bored. Unfortunatly the sire who was our pet got into someones shed in the allotments which is attached to our back garden and ingested anti-freeze and had to be put down about 3 weeks before she had the kittens. Really sad as he was a much loved pet. If he was still around, i was going to invest in a stud house to avoid unplanned pregnancies and different aged litter mates from occuring. Molly our female is a siamese cross and ben our male was a red tabby point siamese. 2 of the kittens seem to be lilac points and one is a ticked tabby like mum Thanks again for your help

It would probably be in your best interest (and the females) to have her spayed now. That way you can completely avoid accidental pregnancy and its better for her health over all. Besides, there is already a ton of cats in shelters and on the streets as it is.

I'm sorry about the loss of the male but I am glad the kitties are doing well.

Yeah, I think I agree with you on that; if she has such difficult pregnancies, it really wouldn't be kind to ask her to have more litters. And, worse, she may pass on the tendency to have problems to any kittens that are bred. I would say that no matter how good the kittens look, get them neutered--it's just not worth it to pass on a trait that would result in difficult pregnancies. That can be downright tragic.

^I Agree too. In some registries there are even rules regarding this kind of situation. For example if the female has 2 difficult pregnancies, they will not register more litters from that female because there's possibly something wrong. Kittens from such litters are spayed because these tend to be passed on from mom to daughter.

Glad to hear the kittens are doing fine. Sorry about your stud. It would be nice to see pics. So your female is a chocolate or lilac (tortie?) ticked tabby? I don't see those very often.

Ooh, yes, we simply must have pics. Siamese are the best!!
