Heat.......

ok I'm soo not a fan of hot weather,go figure I was born in july!!! What I don't get is today it topped 34 in the shade and about 42 in the sun.. Too hot for me but obviously not too hot to cynder. It amazes me that while I am standing with my head in the freezer,he's just hanging out like its a nice comfy temp. Why does excessive heat not bother a cat?

The domestic cat is decended from the desert dwelling African Wildcat

I think they do get bothered by the heat. I live in the tropics and during the hot months (march, april, may) my babies prefer the shade and an electric fan on low settings for a steady breeze.

Arlyn hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

Your cats are smarter then mine.

The two of mine that go outside lay in the sun till I swear they are going to bake. The indoor DSH will bake in the window if she can. The crazy Savannah runs so hard and fast in my homes A/C he pants. So I can not imagine what dumb dumb the Savannah would do to himself outside .

Mine lie on the linoleum when it gets hot. They can't take off their fur like I can take off my shirt, so they find other ways. I think if they were longhaired, I'd clip them in the summer; but so far, they haven't needed anything like that--I haven't seen them panting yet.

Plenty of water and shade seems to do the trick.

Maggie LOVES the sun through the window, but when she's had enough she will sit in the bathtub to cool off LOL.

But its not all that fun getting the cat hair out of the tub everyday

If you check my location on Google maps, you'll see that I am in the Mojave desert.
Add to that the fact that I live in a travel trailer, a more realistic description is tin can with wheels, no insulation.
Summer temps average 115 to 125 (46c to 51c). My AC units cannot cool the trailer adequately once temps exceed 90 (32c), so my trailer hovers around 95 (35) durring daylight hours.

I've never even seen my girls pant.
They do get lazy when it is hot, they sleep, and find the coolest places to do so (on tile, in sinks, in the tub).
One of my girls is longhair (NFC) she's never been bothered by it.
I've never clipped her down because of temperature (I have clipped for matting).

However, I've had her for 17 years and she and I both are frm Seattle, much cooler, but there is also humidity up there, lots of it.
Summer temps rarely get over 80 (26), and when they do, it doesn't last long.
In the lower temp/higher humidity she was as miserable as me in the summer, she would pant, stay in the basement etc.

It was obvious to me that the hotter, dryer climate suited her much better.

My cat is a Seattle native, but her ancestry is from the desert, and her body still remembers, genetic memory.

My Crumb hates the heat -- he will actually pant if he thinks it's too hot in the house, or if we get in the car and there's no AC!

When Parker was at my parents and the hot afternoon sun was coming in the back door, he would lay on the floor right in the sun. The floor would be hot to the touch, yet he LOVED it. I swear I could have gotten second degree burns from his black fur.

My three domestic cats do not pant. The F3 Savannah does. The breeder and my vet agree that is normal. He will also knock over his water dish and lay in it if he gets too hot. He is just great on my wood floors. .
