I was fixing dinner and since I was making fish, I decided to boil a little fish to add to the boys' wet food and had the bowl of their fish to put in the microwave in my hands. Hobbes started clawing at my leg in an attempt to climb my legs to get to the fish and his claw dug in and I took a step back and right into Calvin
. He was lounging there and I stepped on something soft - so I think it was his belly. He screamed and hissed at the same time and then ran to the bedroom and I followed him when he suddenly turned back and hissed at me. Then he just lay on the carpet - not in an unsual way - just the way he normally does. I tried to comfort him through my crying and did not know what to do. I gave them some treat to see if he was ok enough to be tempted - he took it from me. With time I slowly touched him and felt around - he did not particularly react to any particular spot I touched but he moved away from me and was avoiding me. I let him be - he was moving around the house but would move away when he'd see me approach. About 45 mins later I went and laid on the floor next to him and was caressing him. He then suddenly clawed at my arm and then hissed at me twice and moved away. I left him and went and prepared their dinner and gave them their dinner. Calvin ate his food and then he came and rubbed against my legs. After dinner he's not really avoiding me and coming to me and vocalizing. Now he's sitting beside me, groomed himself and napped.

Do I take him to the emergency vet? The closest one is not that close and if we take him, it will not be immediately. I know cats hide their pain and want to make sure we are not missing anything.

Calvin is walking fine. He did jump at a fly a little while back but I have not seen him be very active but this is their slow time. He's napping now beside me and his demeanor changed after dinner and he seems his old self now.
Adding: I just went to the kitchen and Calvin followed me and was vocalizing - he let me pick him up and was purring away. If things are okay I do not want to unnecessarily stress him by the emergency vet trip. I will keep a close eye for him peeing and pooping and generally how his demeanor is. I guess since he's no longer avoiding me, he may be feeling a little better?

I want to make sure he's fine. You cannot imagine how badly I feel - I feel so guilty and cannot forgive myself. I've been having a rough week and this has just broken me. I just want to be sure Calvin is okay. I know DH will be livid when I tell him.

Would appreciate any suggestions and anything that I need to look out for.

If the cat is eating, drinking , urinating and defecating normally I would certainly not take it to the emergency vet. Plus he is walking around and jumping normally, so I would at least wait till you can see your normal vet. If you really feel taking him to the veterinarian is necessary.

I would not worry so much about his behavior since he was just frightened. As you can see he has forgiven you for the most

Oh, sweetie - there's probably not a person on this board who hasn't somehow hurt their kitty accidentally at some point.

First, I agree - if he's eating, peeing, and pooing fine and is acting normally, I don't think you need to make a run to the e-vet unless you see his tummy swelling or something like that. If nothing changes overnight, for your own comfort you may want to call your vet just to check, but I bet he's ok. You probably didn't step with your whole weight (and, hey, don't forget, you had one kitty clawing up you - forgive yourself the way you'd forgive anyone else). Calvin's already forgiven you - he just got scared. I really think you're hurting more than he is right now.

I've stepped on my babies, and I've felt just the way you feel - followed them around for hours, watching anxiously and apologizing all over the place. One time I stepped on Dante's tail right after a dental cleaning - talk about adding insult to injury in his mind - but he suddenly made a move and I stepped back and right on him. Dante hissed pretty good at me too and didn't want to be near me. 30 minutes later I was forgiven.

Keep us posted, but you are not the first, or last, person to accidentally step on someone else. Calvin and Hobbes know how much you love them. They don't want you to be sad.

Agreed! I have stepped on Maia's foot while wearing high heels. It still haunts me to think about. I have also, accidentally kicked all 7 of my cats in the neck, head, side, and rear end while they dart in front of me at feeding time.
You are most certainly not alone!

Anybody who says they've never accidentally hurt their cat is probably lying. It's easy to do. We all try to avoid it, but it's just not possible. Maybe we all need the beepy back up alarms?

I'm sure Calvin is fine
You said he's acting normal, so I'm sure he's fine. It was an accident, Calvin's been with you long enough to know you don't hurt him. He knows you didn't mean it

Thanks Cat Person, darlili, Laurie, Jinxywinx, mrblanche and My4LLMA. I was feeling so so terrible - in fact, still am but Calvin seems to have forgiven me. It's not that we have not very ocassionally hurt the boys since they are always at our feet when we are moving. In fact, we've stopped wearing shoes at home to keep that to a minimum but what I did yesterday was more than an ocassional little kick or stepping on their tail. Plus it was his belly and there's always a chance of injury there that we cannot see. Later at night he was very loving towards DH and me and played a lot with DH, too. But considering he was hissing at me after 45 mins to a hour, it must have hurt bad.

Once again, thank you so much for understanding and helping me calm down.

Since Calvin is approaching you once again and acting normal it would seem that he is feeling better and has forgiven you.

I can't tell you how many times I have stepped on my cat's tail or tripped over them in the process of trying to feed them. Somehow I think they think I will get there faster if they trip me on the way there.

I would be concerned if Calvin kept avoiding you, but since he isn't he should be ok. Don't be too hard on yourself. It was an accident and as many others have posted....we all have done it at one time or another. It is not something done purposely and accidents will happen.

Don't feel bad I accidently almost tripped over Snowy she would always run in front of me. We all make mistakes. Seems like no matter what we do our animals seems to be very forgiving.

Thanks, everyone, for the reassurances.
I realize that there's no limit to how careful you can be with the furbabies and even then, accidents can happen. I just pray that I do not hurt him the way I did this last time

You probably won't since you are wanting to be more aware. Don't worry just be happy that they are still your buddies.

I think Calvin is fine, he was probably more in shock that you accidentally stepped on him than anything. He has forgiven you

I think we all can say we accidentally hurt our cats at least once. I know I did!

I've stepped on my cats, too! Nothing makes us feel as badly as inflicting pain on one of our babies. I'm sorry it happened and I'm so glad that Calvin seems to be OK. And that he's forgiven you.

It was real generous of Calvin to forgive me - he's generally such a chill cat.
However, he's not happy with me today and I was at the receiving end of some vicious hissing when I tried to scruff him gently
(have the post in the behavior forum)

I think he was just mad and was letting you know he was upset you stepped on him. Despite it being an accident, cats seem to take EVERYTHING personally.

Heck I still step on Eleka because she likes to try and trip me. She has this attitude that if I don't pay attention to her THE MINUTE that I step outside..then she's going to trip me and "make me pay for it"

Even if I do watch for her..she still manages to pull a houdini and pop out of nowhere.

Nowadays I've done it so often that when I look for her and can't find her until I hear the "MREEEAAARRR!!" I say "oh there you are. hello!"

I know how you feel, I've accidentally stepped on my kitties too and it is scary! Sounds like he will be fine but if you notice anything concerning overnight, call your regular vet in the morning.
