My kitty litter routine

Thread Starter
Hi, I am a first time cat owner, initially cat-sitting for a friend until they can find a new owner. My place is small and unfortunately I have to keep the litter box in my room. In a way, it is convenient for me to incorporate it in my routine because I always see it when I wake up and before I go to bed.

It is an enclosed litter box and I scoop it once in the morning and once in the evening every day. For the first week I did not mind it; it was never in my way and it did not smell. But I am nearing the second week and I am not sure if my room is starting to smell since my nose is used to it. Even if it doesnt smell so bad, it kind of smells inside the box and I am not sure if I should clean it all out yet or if it is still bearable for the cat.

I clean my room every day and throw the poop in the garbage outside right away. My windows are open and I occasionally have a fan on to circulate the air. After every time I scoop the poop and urine from the box, I mix it a bit so the litter on the sides can mask the smell. But sometimes I clean it too early and the urine clumps have little clumps around it and it is harder to scoop. I am worried these tiny clumps will cause make it smell more. The cat also only eats dry food.

I have been following my friend's routine of using about 3 inches of kitty litter (she says the cat likes to really bury the stuff) and sticking to the same brand (Special Kitty clumping litter with odour control). She said if it starts to smell I can add a scoop of fresh litter to mask the odour. And to change the whole thing every three weeks. She would also sometimes not clean the box for three to four days (max). But being the neat-freak that I am I don't think I can let it slip that easily.

Does this sound like a good routine? I don't want to change it drastically in case the cat won't like it. What are some ways I can control the odour even if I can't notice it in my room and in the box? Am I missing something here? I am hoping the litter will last for another week (in keeping with my friend's previous routine.)

Thanks.

I have two indoor cats and two indoor/outdoor cats and six litter boxes.I scoop all of them twice a day.

However I clean all the boxes once a week religiously. When I say clean I mean dump all the litter and put in fresh litter. Also before I put in fresh litter I clean each box with a Fresh Step litter box wipe. But you could just clean the box with a paper towel and some soapy water before putting in clean litter.

I also use Special Kitty cat litter but the non clumping formula.

Your routine sounds good. You can usually go at least a month before changing clumping litter, if it's scooped regularly. But if you want to change the litter, go ahead. . .most cats like having fresh litter, it shouldn't bother the kitty at all. Make sure to scrub the box well, rinse completely, and let it dry thoroughly or the odor will just permeate the new litter too.

If you don't notice any odor, there probably isn't any . Clumping litters do a fine job of keeping odor away.

When I used a clay litter, I had to change the whole box once a week even if I scooped. When I clean out my boxes, I dump the litter and then spray chlorox cleanup with Bleach in the bottom of the pan and rinse it out in the bathtub. When I finish rinsing, I dry it with a paper towel and then spray the tub with the clorox stuff and let it sit for 5 mins, then rinse. I have 4 cats in the house and 2 indoor/outdoor cat and most people are shocked that they can't smell the boxes! (I use World's Best Cat Litter - the scented kind).

Did you use clumping or non-clumping? Non-clumping clay litter absolutely MUST be changed at least once a week (I honestly can't get more than 3 days out of it), but clumping clay litter can go much longer, as long as you scoop regularly. The guy who invented clumping clay litter didn't fully change his cat's litterbox for her entire 16-year lifespan (of course he topped it off and cleaned the box now and then, but never fully changed it!). I can usually get 2-3 months from clumping litter, but I figure most people are more comfortable changing it once a month.

To wash the litterboxes, I scrub them good with dish soap and a non-scratch scrubby sponge (in the shower, with a hand-held shower head), then soak them in white vinegar for 10 minutes (white vinegar cuts through urine stains and odors). Then I wash the vinegar out (with dish soap again) and put them outside to dry (in the basement in the winter). I can't imagine just wiping the box out with a wet wipe or just spraying with cleaner then rinsing. . .but I guess if it works for someone else, more power to them!

When it comes to the litter box, I scoop either once or twice a day, depending on whether I have work, and whether he's even gone twice that day. I shake all the litter to one side, scrape off the pee, and then inspect for any small clumps that escaped (like you explained) and pick them up using the corner of the scoop. I change probably every month, or sooner if it's starting to smell funny.
