My guess would be that they turn a blind eye when it's not a lot of bandwidth but once it's a video or tons of large image files they do something about it. I can't blame them really - bandwidth is the most expensive part of hosting a website - not storing the images on their hard disk. A while ago we were short of space and had to ask forum members to go easy on uploading pics as well.

And yes, for a fee you can do anything you like
Just get your own paid account with any host and link to those images all you like. When you exceed your allocated and paid for bandwidth, they will tell you and charge you for the extra.

It's just not what Imagestation is about - they're a free service that wants you to store your photo albums there and get people to view those images ON THEIR SITE to increase their pageviews and generate income for them from advertising. It's their business model and it's perfectly legitimate. That they turn a blind eye to the occasional remote linking is very nice of them. Had they wanted to, they could deactivate all of it automatically by setting up the server to prevent remote linking.

Sorry to spoil the Imagestation bashing party
Just thought to bring you the other side of the story, as a webmaster would see it. I dare anyone here to offer a totally free image and video storage service that allows remote linking - you'd be broke within a week and in debt too

Welp, guess I better go change the How to Post Pictures thread. Darn.

I do understand Imagestation's position. And I'm sure it was the video that got you, Sicy, while the rest of us can still link individual pics. I'm sure I'll get called on it eventually, but until then....

They probably will eventually de-activate the remote linking. It's too bad, because that's primarily the way a person can share their pictures on Message Boards. I remember when you could remote link to places like geocities, and that ended a few years ago.

I pay for my Paul Stanley web page, and I honestly hate it, when people remote link to my pictures, because it costs me bandwithe.
However, I do have free website that is provided by my Internet Provider, and I can remote link from that.

I'm thinking I'm going to move all my pictures I want to share to free Earthlink site, and link from there. I would imagine almost everyone here also has a free site that is provided by their ISP, perhaps it would be easier to put your pix on those sites and try remote linking from there.

That's a good idea, Sicycat. But,doesn't your Internet Provider offer you a free website with your service? I have Earthlink, and they offer a free 10 Megabyte or maybe 15 megabyte website as part of my service. My Paul Stanley Page is too large for it, that's why I ended up having to pay for that, but there's enough space to store photo's and things.

Yes I have earthlink and 10 mb of service but I'm almost all used up because of my website, plus they do the bandwidth thing and when I use up all my bandwidth for the month, (too many hits to my page or images) my website and all my pics go down until the 1st of the next month. I'd rather not have to worry about that.

I didn't know that Earthlink had a Bandwith thing. Good to know. Yeah, the $20.00 thing is a pretty good deal. Is that for a year?

That's just $20 to upload 1000. Not per year or month or anything. One time fee. No bandwidth issues. And the links link to every message boaard I go to.

I've been using it for about 2 months. It's nothing like imagestation.. its actually easier to use
just upload your pic then click on it after and get the link.

You can join right now for free... try it out.. you can upload 25 pics for free then if you decide you like it, might as well pay the $20 to be able to upload 1000 pics.
