Anybody in Virginia? Are you all OK??

5.8 earthquake just hit. We felt it in central PA....about ten minutes ago.

I was about to post the same thread. I felt it on Long Island, NY! Hope everyone's OK!

Felt it in Wilmington! I'm from Virginia and all of my family and friends are okay. My 4 year old nephew woke up crying because he was on the top bunk and his bed was hitting the wall. Poor guy couldn't get down! If you have any friends in the area (DC, Baltimore, etc) don't be surprised if they don't answer the phone, because Verizon and AT&T are down.

OMG is that what I felt about 20 minutes ago. I was sitting at my desk writing out checks when I thought something hit the top of my mobile home and my mirror on the desk started shaking, it happened twice one after the other. Could that quake reach this far??

that 5.9 quake from VA could certainly reach all across the east coast and up to Toronto (A friend was there and felt it!)

I'm in Manhattan and amazingly enough I didn't feel anything...... I hope everyone is safe.

I'm from Richmond, about 30 miles out from the epicenter. I was at work - definitely one of the strangest experiences I've ever had! We had tremors for about twenty or so seconds, strong enough to shake our windows & desks, and ourselves. Our building is being renovated so when the rumbling first started we just assumed it was more construction, but construction shouldn't make your feet shake!!!!

They evacuated our building for about an hour and a half and went through checking for damage & gas leaks, etc. After we filed back in, we "worked" about another hour and finally they said non-essential personnel could go home. I'm so glad!!! I have super cheap Walmart bookshelves full to the brim and was so worried they may have fallen over. Luckily, it was just a few picture frames and my floor lamp.

We are all okay in this area as far as I know!!

I'm in MA and was at work when it happened. SOOOO freaky. I thought I was dizzy.....wasnt quite sure what was going on. Turned around to look at my co worker and I noticed my chair was shaking and the office equipment and a filing wall shelf were shaking and creaking. Such a weird feeling. I ran outside and yelled to people in the parking lot if they felt something and they all had too. Definitely a very weird feeling.

I hope everyone is OK!

Felt it in Morganton, NC. I was in yearly training in a prison known as the "high rise" that has quite a bit movement on the upper floors when its windy. However, there was no wind today and we were only on the 4th floor. Initially, a man that worked there said he thought something had hit the building. But there was a woman in the room from California who said "that was an earthquake." It gave us quite a scare.

I have a cousin in Arlington and hope there's something on Facebook or in my email that she's fine.

I didn't feel anything here. But did notice that Chester was walking around the apartment like he was looking for something. He came into the bedroom sniffing around, looked at me, then went into his hiding spot in the closet.

At the time I thought "this is odd" but he didn't seem too upset and didn't stay in the closet but a few minutes, then went on his way back to the living room.

Later when I looked at the news on my computer I see that the earthquake happened at about that time. Maybe that's was he was investigating.

I hope everyone is ok.

We had a good shake at work today. I was on the phone with DH (who was in NJ, on a loading dock) when it happened. I couldn't figure out why my cubicle and pc were violently shaking! At first, I thought the cube was shaking due to another person slamming their above the desk cubby storage closed; but I remember thinking that it seemed far too hard for that, and why did it keep slamming? Meanwhile, on the phone, DH heard me say to my co-workers, "What's that shaking?!?" He thought I was asking HIM what the noise was where he was! At first, he thought someone was driving a forklift over the loading dock, so he said to me, "Oh, it's some idiot driving a forklift too fast!" He forgot I was only about 60 miles from HIS earthquake, and I was going through it, too!

Of course, I was so worried about my kitties--not that they'd be hurt--but that they'd be terrified; but they were normal when I got home.

The same thing happened to me! I was laying on the couch and the whole thing started shaking, and I thought I was about to pass out or something! Then I got a text from my brother in Baltimore saying they just got a bad earthquake. Lol, it was his second day of teaching at a new school and his entire 4th grade class was running around screaming!

to everyone who felt the quake. I hope everybody is OK and all kitties are safe!!

I'm glad no one was killed or injured in this quake. It caused quite a bit of damage to cars etc, and could've easily killed people.
I felt it here in Ontario and immediately knew it was an earthquake. Strange feeling as we don't get many of those here (thankfully).

I'm a few hours drive from the epicenter and we felt it!!

DD and I were at wally-world (as if that's not enough to rattle your nerves) and I was putting the groceries in the trunk. She was still in the shopping cart. I felt/saw the car moving. My first thought was that I didn't know I could move the car so much by bumping it so I bumped it again and it moved and I did it again and it didn't. LOL...it was still shaking for the second bump. After the second bump I checked for wind...nope..no wind. I didn't recognize it was coming from the ground but it reminded me of feeling dizzy with how things seem to move; but I remember thinking that I didn't feel dizzy. Now it makes sense because the sensation was coming up from my feet and not down from my head.

If other people in the parking lot reacted I sure didn't notice. I grabbed some lunch for me and DD and didn't know what happened till I put the TV on while she was eating and I was putting away the groceries. Everything made sense then! And then I got excited and tried calling everyone I knew. I'm such a dork.

Some pictures on the wall were crooked a bit and one thing on a shelf looked to have moved a tad. My cats were acting normal. My Mom, who works in a big brick building, said they felt it good. Thought someone was messing with her chair and it was like she could hear the bricks of the building shaking. I called my Dad who lives in Upstate NY and he said he only felt it because he was sitting on the throne. But he mostly heard it because some things on his dresser were rattling and he could see them move from his "seat." DH was in his work truck at a light and he felt it nicely in there.

My aunt and uncle both work for the USGS, and a website's been put up for people to submit earthquake reports. It all shows up on a big map and it's pretty cool. If you felt it, please go to this site and submit your location!

My oldest son's dad (my ex-husband) was in a hotel in Richmond VA when it hit. He was in a meeting on the 5th floor and he said it was mass chaos but it took people a lot of time to figure out what was going on! When it dawned on them, they all ran and the alarms went off. Luckily everyone was okay. I live in TN and we did not feel it here.

I remember that. My half sister lives there. They had one in Quebec too, didn't they?

It's done some damages and that seems to be the worst of it. I still haven't heard any reports of injuries. My father-in-law things we shouldn't dismiss it so lightly because what if (wait...I need to go re-read his exact words...) "What if it's just the first stage a big quake that makes bridges fall into rivers and buildings crumble??" I pretty much face-palmed when I read it. I mean yes expect aftershocks; but aren't those typically smaller than the original event? Either way I'm not going to live in fear. You cannot control these things. It does no one any good to be afraid something bigger will come. It wasn't an unheard of thing that happened and it did some damage but that's it. And I'm grateful for that. The east coast has seen bigger quakes in its history and it'll see more quakes in the future I'm sure; but it's still not Cali here.

I was at a birthday party wtih DD and none of us felt it (just outside NYC), though my mom was wondering at what point who bumped into the table she was sitting at

My dad lives in the DC area, and I called him as soon as I heard, thankfully, he is alright

My nephew and niece-in-law are OK....they're in eastern VA, in a D.C. suburb. Our son lives in southern PA and they didn't feel much of anything.
Well- I'm in SE VA and felt nothing. Neither did dd. We were both on the bottom floor of the house though. Jasper, who is afraid of EVERYTHING was fine. Though he did spend the evening in one of his "safe spots" so I'm not sure if he felt anything or not. Other 2 were fine.

Dh called and said he felt it. Then they evacuated the building he was working in

And YDD said she felt it. But she was over at the high school for Freshman orientation on the second floor.

Then the local news went on air and spent 3 HOURS covering it I thought it was kind of silly. Esp since we've got Irene out there and that's more dangerous than an earthquake with an epicenter that was about 3 hours from us.

We felt it in Western Maryland and West Virginia. I was at work (MD) on the second floor and when everything started shaking and our chairs (on wheels) started moving on their own. You never saw a group of people stand up so fast in your life! Our office building is fairly new and is built in mining country so everyone's first thought was it was built over an abandoned mine and it's collapsing. Then we were like "ok, it was only an earthquake". My MIL was at home in WVa and the house shook so hard the vibrations closed her laptop.

Of all the natural disasters, earthquakes are the worst, IMO. Hurricanes, blizzards, even tornadoes give you a little time to prepare or take shelter, but earthquakes give no warning at all. Although, when I lived in Guam and earthquakes were common, I started taking hints from my cats. I guess they were able to pick up on the vibrations before I could feel them because about 30 seconds before things started rocking they would start running around, not playing but more like they were looking for cover.

According to historical records, boston has a major earthquake about every 200 years. They are overdue for the next 1 and they could have 1 anytime.

Word is that it was caused by the Founding Fathers violently rolling over in their graves. Hey, have to blame this on Obama somehow!

I agree, considering the se tsunami, the japan earthquake, haiti, etc that we've had recently, this wasn't that bad. Californians were probably thinking that too... "oh, a 5.8, aww how cute".
