My friend caught the stray cat today and we aren't sure what to do with it we've asked around but nobody wants it.we might give it to the SPCA nearby but i have one question.will they give it back for free if it doesn't get adopted in a certain amount of time?we really don't want him to be put down he's really sweet but we can't have another cat right now.we might take it if no one wants him.
Does anyone know?

This depends on the individual shelter. You'd have to ask what their policy is. I would say that most large shelters probably won't, but a small shelter might. If they do anything like vaccinations or neutering, I'm sure they can't let you have him back for free, but they might give you first chance at adopting.

At our shelter, if you surrender the animal, it becomes our propert to do with as we see fit. In fact, we're not even allowed to tell you what we do with it.

We tell people that if they think they might want to keep the animal, they should bring it in, let us take photos of it, etc., and they can hold on to it until someone comes in looking for it.

are you 100% certain that he isn't someones pet? Sometimes when Animal are found they are really loved pets that just got misplaces either by a move or a daily outing etc etc....I would put up ads without giving to many details on him, they would have to be able to give you some markings etc in the area where he was found...IF you are certain he is a stray than you call a rescue or a shelter...a rescue may ask if you are willing to keep him until he gets adopted, or they may have a foster home available. A shelter will stick him in a cage and either adopt him out or send him to a rescue....Here before they put down they always call our rescue or the other in the area.

We took him to the vets so they can take it to the SPCA tomorrow.we wouldn't have been able to keep him past today,he was unneutered and sprays so we had to keep him in the garage in a cat carrier.but they said they'd take good care of him.we might check up on him at our SPCA just to see how he is.they will neuter him.
