Does this mean Midnight has Asthma?

For Gotcha week, 1 of the things I got Luna and Midnight is Da Bird. Midnight runs around fetching straws all the time and has never had a problem. Tonight he did do a lot of running and pouncing, chasing Da Bird for about a 1/2 hour or so. He began panting the way a dog pants. So I stopped playing with him right away. I picked him up, he was breathing very hard. His heart beating very fast. He was also boiling hot. We do have the air conditioners on, so it's not hot in the house. He panted for about 5 minutes then stopped, but continued breathing hard. He's laying down now sleeping. He's on the cold kitchen floor, hopefully that helps cool him down some.

This happened once before years ago to Lynxx. When we took him to the vet they said he had Asthma.

No, I don't think so. Sweetie, Midnight is just plain old hot. My cats, especially Perkins pant for a few minutes too after play sessions. I even got a picture of him the other night, panting. If he is panting for no reason, another words, he was not running around playing and exerting himself, then he needs the vet. BUT, after exertion panting is totally normal, especially in the summer even with air conditioning running. your a good meowmy . Give Midnight and Luna a for me and tell them to stop worrying you, although I am the same way with my furkids. Always better to post and ask, that is what we are here for

I have to agree with Lauren. If he were coughing, or having trouble breathing doing more normal levels of activity... then I'd worry. But when you have a good workout, you're breathing hard, hot, and your heart is beating really fast!

Sounds like the birthday present was a hit!

This happens with Tumbles as well, and he doesn't have asthma. I think it's just normal from playing hard and excitedly. Now, if that happened while they were resting or doing normal things, then I'd be concerned.

No that's never happened to Midnight before, I'm glad it's nothing serious. Midnight's still sleeping and breathing normal

I don't think so either.....honest, honey, I think he's OK.

Our Rainbow Baby, Banshee, did have feline asthma. While she had a lot of trouble when she would run and play, a lot of her problem would stem from actual coughing spells. It was almost like she was trying to bring up a hairball, but nothing ever came up. She used to spend a lot of time purring and when the asthma got really bad, she would start to purr and then she would cough. I'd swear she was trying to bring up something, but there were never anything. She was diagnosed with feline asthma and put on Prednisone and Theophylline.

It sounds to me like Midnight was just really pooped from his play time. Mollipop did that a couple times. When she was playing really hard and exerting herself with Da Bird, she would actually lay there and pant. I put some fresh, cold water with ice cubes in the bowl and then she would get a bit of a drink.

If it makes you feel any better, by all means take him to the vet, just to be sure. But I agree with the others here....he was just too pooped to pip!

That actually sounds like our RB Sheltie, Daisy. When we played frisbee she wouldn't stop until she absolutely had to---totally worn out, panting, but with a big doggie smile on her face, then sleeping the day away. I have to go along with everyone else: I think Midnight was just exhausted and worn out from his strenuous playing.

Don't worry, it just sounds as if he was doing a lot of playing in the heat! Imagine how you would feel if you were jumping around that much in hot weather.

It doesn't sound like asthma to me...just a plain old wore out cat. I had a cat with asthma, and his attacks were much more labored than just panting. You can see a video of a cat having an asthma attack here: http://fritzthebrave.com/asthma/symptoms.html

He wasn't coughing at all, and he didn't look like the cat in that video. After he woke up he was fine, running around and playing again.
