Getting another cat - older vs younger

So it seems like our flea problem is finally under control and we are just about ready to bring a second cat into our home. We already know that we are going to adopt from the same rescue that we adopted Annie from, and there is a cat there that I really like, but I am concerned with whether she will bond with Annie. The facility is cage-free, so this tabby is used to being around a variety of cats. She is 18 months old, very playful yet very independent (she'll let you pick her up or pet her, but she tends to have the attitude that she'd really rather be somewhere else). Our Annie is super mellow and pretty much would get along with anyone I think.

My question is do I take a chance on the older tabby or would it be safer to stick with a kitten (around 5 months old)? I think Annie really wants a companion and I would hate to bring a new cat in who just gives her the cold shoulder.

I'm sure there is no right or wrong answer, but personally I'd try to age match approximately, just so that the energy levels are at least ballparkish.

Kittens are just so fun though, are more adaptable/mold-able, and young or old there isn't a 100% guarantee it'll be very close w/ Annie. But its still great mental stimulation either way IMO to have another kitty or even small doggie around, just so there's more things going on especially when you're away.

I also agree with Ducman69 there is no right or wrong answer. I think when choosing a companion cat for the existing cat you should take some things into consideration. The first like Ducman69 said was energy level. The second is the present cats personality. Try and find one that compliments the current cats personality. Lastly try and pick a cat that is a little younger then the resident cat cause IMO that will make it easier for them to get along.
