Hi folks, I am looking for feedback on if anyone knows anything that might be able to help my ailing Cleo cat. She is old (19-20, don't know her exact age) so it just may be her time, but she is truly one of the special ones and I want to try to bring her back to health if I can.

After seeming fine on Sunday, she suddenly went downhill in a hurry on Monday. She looked lethargic and weak and wasn't eating any food. I brought her to an emergency vet overnight and then to her regular vet the next day, and she didn't look good. Both said they wouldn't know for sure without more tests like an ultrasound, but that it looked like it could be kidney failure even though her levels didn't come back too bad.

On Wednesday she started to perk up a little bit although she still wasn't eating or drinking and didn't move all day out of a particular hiding spot she had chosen. I started feeding her baby food via syringe at this point like the doctor suggested. On Thursday and today she started drinking again although other than taking two or three bites out of her normal food on Thursday, she hasn't seemed interested at all in food and I've had to give her the baby food. Plus she still has no interest in moving out of her spot. I have taken her a couple times onto the bed and couch for some cuddles, which she usually likes very much, but she'll stay there with me for about 2-5 minutes or so and then just walk back to her spot.

Other than that and the fact that she seems to be sitting down very gingerly when she sits/lays down or shifts resting spots, there's no real outward symptoms of what might be wrong as she doesn't look nearly as weak as she did on Monday and Tuesday. She's been a lot more receptive to me as I come near and seems alert and aware, whereas she seemed to be on death's door earlier in the week. I got optimistic yesterday that she might be bouncing back, but I talked with the vet today and she isn't nearly as optimistic, saying that Cleo should have been showing more life if the medication we have been giving her was working.

I'm not sure where to go from here. I want to keep her with me because Cleo is the sweetest little heart that there ever was and is my kindred spirit, and I know she'd want to stay with me if she could. But I also don't want to put her through pain. The other tests that the doctors brought up were stuff like an ultrasound and a 24-hour hospital stay for monitoring; money is an issue for me but I might think about doing them even though the vet said they might not be of much help. I'm wondering, can anyone here think of anything else that I could try that might help her? Thanks so much for any advice you could give.

We've been there many, many times. You'll know what is right. I prefer a natural lifespan. But, as caregivers we need to be prepared to make decisions.
I will hope that you get some sort of solid information from your veterinarian.
You are clearly a loving, caring person and your friend has a superb home.
Good luck and times a million. ! A few more days may just do it.

The first thing that jumps to mind is constipation. It would explain all the symptoms.

Hi, Klarr.

I have no ideas for what's ailing your sweetie. How has she been doing since Friday? Does she seem to be feeling any better?

At her age, choices begin to get really difficult. I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.
I'm hoping real hard she's better today and it isn't quite her time yet.

Is your kitty prone to fur balls? I know that stuck fur balls can make a cat sick. Is she any better?

Thanks everyone; we're taking things one day at a time right now. Cleo looked like she was bouncing back on Saturday but then went downhill in a hurry again on Sunday and looked terrible. She had finally taken a few bites of her own food on Saturday afternoon but then on Sunday I woke up to discover she had missed the litterbox again with her pee and had thrown up and looked every bit as bad as she did when all this started (she had thrown up mucous some in the days leading up to this but this looked like food and hair). I was afraid that she wasn't going to get better and that I might have to put her down, but then she looked a little better yesterday and then today looks pretty good considering where she was two days ago. I got some stool softener from the vet that I had been giving her and she finally was able to let some out last night. Hopefully that will go a long way in helping her get better.

I am still feeding her via syringe, and she still looks slightly weak and feeble but she looks noticeably better today compared to Monday. She isn't showing much interest in coming out of the little corner she's been hanging out in for most of the last nine days, although I put so many blankets and soft things over there and she looks so comfy that I can't blame her for wanting to hang out there. But she has walked around a little bit and is a lot more happy to see me when I come near her. So my optimism is back up again and hopefully she won't go downhill again.

I'm so glad to see a positive update! Many, many vibes that Cleo continues to mend!

And some encouragement and warm thoughts for you, too, Klarr.

Thank you guys, I appreciate it
Unfortunately I'm not as optimistic today as miss Cleo has had a rough day. She had a pretty violent vomiting spell earlier in the afternoon and seems pretty down again, and she's been missing the litterbox this afternoon. In general she's lost a lot of weight and even though she has shown signs of bouncing back, she hasn't been herself and hasn't been at full strength for a week and a half. I'm not giving up on her yet but the vet thinks it doesn't look good and that I'll have to be making the decision very soon whether to put her down or not. I view her as a very beloved member of the family so it will break my heart into a million pieces if I have to do that, but I don't want her to suffer.

Oh no, Klarr! I am so very sorry. I've been in your position before and this choice has got to be the most gut-wrenching one a pet owner can make. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. You are not alone, sweetie.

Thanks everyone for your help and kind words. Cleo went downhill very fast yesterday evening and overnight. She was near death and visibly suffering all night and the vet said it was time, so I put her down this morning.
