Does my neighbour's cat like me?

Hi, I am new to this forum.

Basically, my neighbours have a cat, I have never liked cats until I saw this one, she is so cute, she is very friendly too. She sometimes hangs around in our garden and if I see her I open the door and she meows and runs in and lies down on the floor for me to stroke her. She also takes it in turn to meow back and forth with me . She always rubs herself on me and stays around me even though my parents are also in the house. I think she prefers me to them.

Sometimes she jumps up on me and will cuddle up to me, she did it this morning for about half an hour and started to fall asleep . She also licks my hands and purrs when i stroke her.

It makes me want to get a cat for myself, she is such a lovely cat. I rarely feed her but occasionally I give her a bit of tuna or mackerel if I'm eating it. My neighbours don't mind that she comes in or that we give her food, they're nice people.

So does she like me or does she just come in because it's warm and she's hungry?

Welcome to the Forums!

Both your versions may be true, but she IS definitely liking you.

Cats are good at pleasing themselves in if they want something. Say they are hungry, or it is cold and the doors to their home is closed.

But she is clearly overdoing this - thus - she is liking you.

The only question is possibly, is she superfriendly and likes you, OR if she would prefer to live with your family instead.

It is not uncommon cats prefer to move to some neighbour, even from decent homes.

You seems to be a nice guy. Why, if you are thinking to get your own cat (family cat), so go on. Especielly as there are lotsa of cats needing a home...

A tip. this cat is superfriendly, so easy to like. A tip may be to get a shy cat.
A shy cat, once you won its friendship, will be your friend - and like the other family members too.
Love from a shy cat is double nice! Believe me.

The love given you not because it is thursday, but because it is YOU.

Good luck!

I don't think she wants to live with us, she doesn't spend lots of time here, it's more like short, regular visits about 5 times a week.

I wish I could get a cat of my own , but we had a dog and he died a few years ago and since then my family said no more pets, plus I'll be going to university in the next 2-3 years.

Also, if you get a cat from a kitten, how can you be sure if it's a shy cat or a friendly cat?

Thanks for your reply.

ah, I was thinking about you could take some cat from a rescue group, them taking it in a semiferal and fostered it.
Such a cat becomes a wonderful pet to the owner family, but a little shy to strangers.

There are a lot of such cats. And they are often better pets than bough home raised cats. They know outside can be horrible, so they are grateful for a good home.

I wouldnt recommend to you as a newbe to yourself foster a semiferale. It can be done, but not easy for a newbe.
but an already fostered - yes.

So perhaps the same answer to your parents. It is NOT nice when ones beloved pets passes away.
But if you know you DID saved it once, the time with you WAS his extra time on earth - it is easier to see them go on.
The love given is accepted in full.

Good luck!

Yes, your neighbor's cat definitely likes you. We've got a similar situation where I live, there's a cat who comes around to visit when we're in the back yard, I call him Mister. I don't know whose cat he is, but I',m pretty sure he is someone's, and not a stray, because I've offered him food and he rarely eats it, he looks well fed, isn't beat-up looking or scragly like a stray can be, and I very rarely see him at night. So I think he's got a home. I just haven't found out who he lives with yet. Sometimes I'll go out to pet him and give him some love, and then when I want to go back inside, it's hard for me to open the door because he wants in, and my cats want out! And since I don't know where he's from or what germs he may have, I don't want him having contact with my cats, so I always tell him we've got to stay outside friends. (plus, mine are too young to have a boyfriend!! )

Anyway, if you would be thinking of getting a cat, I'd recommend adopting an adult cat from a shelter or rescue group, because kittens are soooo full of energy. Adults aren't so crazy usually, plus the rescue group will know the personalities of the cats and be able to suggest ones based on your personality. But it sounds like you might not get a cat for a few years, if at all, so in the meantime, enjoy the neighbor cat's company!

I know some one who's neighbor had two cats. A mother named Smarty and her son named Wentworth. They started hanging around my friends house all the time. So much that the neighbors eventually gave up Smarty too them. Wentworth was more independent and didn't want to be around people as much.

Smarty just wouldn't leave their house, even at night, she'd cry to come in. Its funny how cats take to strangers more than their own families sometimes, but I consider it a compliment.

Oh I see, I'd definitely take a cat from a rescue group or a home. I've always said to myself if I ever got a dog (which is never now) I'd have one from a rescue group because I don't see the point buying a pup when there are so many without homes. I didn't know you could do this with cats.

It's definitely something I'd consider and would do if it was only my decision.

Yeah, I don't like energetic animals, my aunt had two kittens a while back and they did my head in, always racing round and getting in the way. I would prefer a quiet cat who loves me and doesn't mind sitting with me and watching TV . Basically just a normal well behaved cat. Preferably one that stays indoors because I wouldn't want him or her to get run over.

It's funny, I was walking home from the shop a week ago and could hear this jingling noise (I thought it was my keys in my pocket) but it was getting closer and as I put my key in the front door, it stopped and I looked round and there was this tinny, skinny white kitten sticking it's head out from under the car. It'd obviously followed me home, it was just watching me . Do you think cats can sense if you like animals or not? It's never happened before but since I've liked animals before (I never used to) they seem to like me.

Oh, yeah, they know. It's your body language. Cats don't use words; they read each other's posture and movement. If you're curious and not hostile, most cats will know. Dogs are even better at it, but cats are still pretty darn good.

Seems like your neighbor's cat is a real people cat. Most won't be that friendly to someone they don't know well, but there are quite a few who just love greeting people.

If you wanna get a cat, then go get a cat! Find a shelter; ask for a good-natured cat who doesn't need to have an experienced cat owner. I recommend an adult, because kittens are honestly kind of brain-frazzling and crazy until they hit a year or two old. No-kill shelters are a good place, because the cats stay there for a long while until they're adopted and the workers will often know the cats quite well, so they can make good recommendations. Short-haired cats are easier to care for, generally. It'll take you a while to get to know each other, of course; but that's the case for any new roommate.

BTW--If your area has traffic, wild animals, or people who don't like cats, I highly recommend keeping your cat indoors. A cat will not be unhappy indoors any more than a human would be, and a small apartment to a cat is the size of a huge barn.

Re: the back and forth meowing with humans, do most cats do this?

Also she came here again today for the first time since I made this thread and I fed her some lamb and she left. She didn't want any love today.

I must say that you should adopt a cat and later you will have the different mind. Its the beautiful animal created by God and specially for the inside of the house it is more than other animals.

Meowing back and forth with humans is a common game for a cat to play, yes. Only second to the "I bat small objects off the table and you retrieve them for me to bat off the table" game.

Seems like your neighbor's cat knows you are a source of treats, and will probably come back regularly to visit. There have been cats that were eventually found to have adopted a whole block's worth of humans! It's always nice to have a feline visitor around, especially a polite, friendly one.

She came here again today, usually when she sits with me I pick her up and she sits in my lap but she will now jump up on me and make herself comfortable. If I stop stroking her she nudges my hand and rubs herself against me.

She also fell asleep on me for about 20 mins, she was sort of cuddling up against me, I didn't know how to get her off me. She went eventually. I think she would have stayed here all night haha.

She does this thing with her paws, like tries to reach out at thin air? Why does she does this?
