Been there...done that!

I know, I know. Let me just say that in advance. I am positive all of the answers to my questions are here in the forum, but please be patient as I am new here and just trying to figure some things out.

So, to ask the same questions several others have most certainly asked...

1. What kind / brand of cat litter do you use and what size? Box or bag?
2. How many cats do you have?
3. How long does that size last you?

I am trying to figure out what the advantages of hauling a 50lb bag home is versus just going to the store every few weeks.

Any response would be welcome...and, again, I apologize for asking questions that have already been asked. When I searched, I could only find answers to some, but not all...typically people would say how long the litter lasted and what kind it was, but not how many cats. There is most likely a way to figure out how many cats they have, but...ya know. New here.

Thx!

Lately I've only been buying the 20-pound jugs of litter because I don't feel like hauling around the 40-pound buckets (I buy Tidy Cats Small Spaces). It's a bit more expensive that way but I figure I'm paying to not hurt myself . One jug fills one litterbox. I can usually get away with washing/ completely changing each box once every 2-3 months, with proper scooping (this can be done with clumping litter because the urine is being removed often, but non-clumping will need to be changed at least once a week or the urine smell will get really bad!). Of course the box will need to be topped off now and then; removing the clumps also removes a lot of litter. So I would say that if you manage things properly, you can get away with 20 pounds of clumping litter per month per cat.

Since you should have at least one litterbox per cat, it doesn't matter how many cats you have when it comes to litterbox management .

We use World's Best Litter since it's clumpable, flushable, and I can throw the old litter out on the yard (away from the windows!) since it's all natural and non-toxic. We buy the big 37 lb bags and one bag lasts about a month or so. We have 2 cats, 3 boxes, and completely change the litter about every 2-3 weeks. I don't change all the boxes at the same time.

I have 4 cats indoors, 2 outdoors (but they use a litter box in the garage, oddly enough!). We buy Tidy Cat - long lasting odor control in the 50 pound bags. I go through THREE 50 pound bags in about a month because I am a complete lunatic about having clean litter boxes. I scoop daily and change litter completely once every 3 days or so. I only have 2 litter boxes inside and 1 box outside...but keeping them as clean as I do, I have never had any problems with the cats using them properly.

I have been really wanting to try this! Seems the majority either love it or hate it, with no in between. I have a rebate coupon to try a smaller bag for free...I think I will have to go get one tomorrow.

Thank you, ladies! So, Rebecca...you don't mind carrying those bags?! How do you do it? (I was trying to look for the emoticon with the muscle arms, but I can't find him. Just imagine I put it here.)

Don't apologize for asking questions about this topic. There are always new people reading these threads and I'm sure it will be helpful for both old and new members to read what others are doing and what works for them and their furry families.

1. What kind / brand of cat litter do you use and what size? Box or bag?
I use clumping clay litter. I've been using Tidy Cats 24/7 Performance for the last couple of months. Before that, I was using their Instant Action formula, but prefer the one I've been purchasing now. I buy it in either 27 pound or 35 pound buckets and then use the buckets for litter clean up. I've used other litters before and have run the gamut of types of litter and brands of litter, but, so far, the Tidy Cats is what works best for my household and is the litter both my cats and I agree on.

2. How many cats do you have?
I have 4 kitties -- Emory, Cassidy, Delaney, and Finnegan.

3. How long does that size last you?
A 27 pound bucket typically lasts me approximately 2 weeks. I am very obsessive where my litter boxes are concerned and I scoop the pans a number of times each day. I also completely dump the litter and replace it every week. So, even though the litter would likely last a lot longer, it gets used up a lot quicker in my house. The 35 pound buckets usually last me about 3 weeks, but even those would last longer in an ordinary home.

As far as World's Best Cat Litter is concerned, I steer clear of it. My cats did not like it at all and I found it not to control odor very well. But, some individuals swear by it. So, I suppose, as with most other products, it's all about personal preference -- that of the owners and that of the cats. I'm very picky about the litter I use and my cats are very set in their ways. But, what I do works for us. And, if there's nothing else I can say, it's that a lot of everything regarding cats and cat care is trial and error.

Oh, and a tip for lifting those big bags? When I was buying big non-clumping litter bags, I bought a small hand truck. I'm tiny and those bags were heavy. It worked for me. I hope it can work for you (if that's what you decide to go with).

1 indoor cat and I buy the 32 (42?) pound box of FreshStep that comes in a box. That box then opens up into two smaller boxes with handles which are easy to carry.
When I lived with my parents, they tried all kinds of brands and nothing quite worked like FreshStep so I stuck with it.
