This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

There is nothing wrong with having kibble out for the kitten, and I would let them free feed at that age, as its more or less impossible for them to get fat since they are growing and have tiny tummies.
Wet food is good to have in their diet though, but I would wager the wet that you are feeding simply isn't as tasty as the dry. For now I'd keep the dry the same, and try experimenting with tastier wet food.
My two were free-fed dry and still inhaled their wet food like it was nobodies business, but I learned that its important too to switch wet flavors frequently, and things with fish are both their favorite and they like pate and both were definitely not fans of chunk in gravy. Regarding the fish though, I'd get stuff with fish in it, but not a primary protein source at least not frequently as too much fish usually isn't the best.

i have been feeding him bb wilderness in turkey, chicken and duck, he seems to have totally shied away from the chicken, and will only lick and eat the tiniest amount of the duck and turkey. i just want him to eat something, in the past probably 2 weeks he has become somewhat of a grazer, only eating bits at a time, where as before he ate all the time (wet)... hmm what to do...

Wilderness wet food? My cats hated it. Its the only wet food I've given them that they've left on the plate on their first try. Others have parroted the same in previous threads.
Nothing against Blue, as I think they make great products, but that Wilderness wet stuff apparently just doesn't taste great. My cats favorites are Nutro Complete Care pate in various flavors. Its Nutros supposedly top brand of wet, right above their Max Cat formula, but still only a buck a 5oz can.
I don't like the ingredients, but if it comes down to eating or not eating apparently the most delicious wet food is actually the really cheap stuff from Friskies and the like.

Dry food tends to taste better than wet (kitty crack they call it), so you may have to remove most or all dry in order to get him to eat wet.
If removing dry isn't an option, when you put down wet, don't have dry down as well and leave it out for 30 minutes and then pick it up and put it down later.

I tried to get Tailer to eat the BB Wilderness canned. He can be a picky eater, but he LOVES the dry so I thought the wet might go over. He just sat there and looked at me like I was nuts. I seriously think I could have gotten him to eat broccoli easier than that stuff.
Apparently some of the other TCS kitties agree.
Tailer tends to eat something for a while and then decide that he doesn't like it anymore. Sounds like he and Cynder have something in common. So every so often we have to go through the process of finding a new food that meets his dietary needs and that he'll agree to eat. He will often go back to eating some of his favorite foods after he's had a break from it for a while. For what it's worth, Tailer's favorites tend to be Nutro Max and Wellness pouches. (He prefers chunks and sauce food and will rarely agree to eat pate style.

I've talked to a lot of people in your situation, Cyndersmom, and I feel for you; getting kibble-addicted kitties to eat healthier canned foods can be really, really difficult.
Your biggest asset is going to be your patience. You have to be more determined than your kitty (and you can be, because you know it's for his own good!).
CatInfo.org has a really good, detailed and tip-filled article about transitioning your cat to canned food: Transitioning Dry Food Addicts to Canned Food.
Once you get him on canned - and you will! - then you can start rotating his canned foods. Dr. Hofve wrote a great article that states far better than I have been why rotating foods is such a good idea: Switching Foods.
Good luck!!!!

Fancy feast is kitty crack
. Once your cat tastes it, very hard to get them to eat anything else.
I feed wellness. Pouches and cans. Turkey and duck pouches are scooped up, turkey in 5oz can is also good.

try mixing some canned food in with the kibble. You can also try warming up the wet food in the microwave (make sure you don't microwave the can XD) Heating it up reawakens and releases more scent molecules into the air making it more tasty smelling. Just make sure its just warm. You don't want to burn your cat's mouth. Cats (like dogs) go by smell a lot when they're deciding what to eat.
I'm using Nutro Max Cat canned kitten food for Chacho. He loves the Chicken n Liver and the Turkey n Giblets. I'm still mixing it in with kibble just because kibble is good for the gums but he'd snarf just the wet food in a heartbeat

I had a similar problem. The cat gobbles Friskies can food but turns her nose up at Natural Balance can food...the supposedly more nutritious option. I say supposedly because the more nutritious brand does her no good if she won't eat it.
I was just going to stick to Friskies, but my Missy began to look weak and sickly despite eating several generous servings of wet food per day. I stumbled upon a solution that seems to be working.
Missy loves the freeze dried treats sold at Petco. I give her a little Natural Balance wet food, along with freeze dried shrimp, chicken, and/or tuna (3 pieces each.) She licks her plate dry now.
