Oscar the new cat and Princess the old cat

Hello everyone,

I've just adopted Oscar the Blue Exotic Shorthair and been introudced our new home yesterday. He is 5 years old.

I isolated him to one room but he always begs for me to let him out. Princess, the one year old female Ragdoll seems to be excited with this new addition to our family member. She has purring alot now, always rubbing herself against the floor, the chair etc , basically everything that she can rub herself against.

We introduced both cats to each other. Hissing and growling is heard, but only by Oscar. Princess tries to make friends but Oscar growls and hisses whenever Princess sniffs on his tail. =( Princess is such a sweetie but Oscar is such a defensive cat. Any cat behaviours can explain this? Usually the old cat will hiss and growl, but in my case, it's the other way round.

On a side note, as Oscar is a pedigreed Exotic Shorthair, I understand this breed tears alot. Is it normal for him to tear excessively? I've tried to wipe off the tears with a plain tissue and it seems that the colour of the tears are brownish. This is my first time with a flat-face exotic shorthair.

Secondly, Oscar makes sounds when he breathes. Some sort like someone in flu? Is that normal for Exotic Shorthair or he has respiratory problems?

I hope someone can help me clarify this and they worry me. Thanks alot. Your help is greatly appreciated. =)

The discharge could be a herpes infection flare-up from the nerves and stress of introduction.

I'd suggest adding approx 1,000mg of l-lysine to his diet for a week, and then keep up at 500mg daily. Princess, you can keep a steady dose of 250.

I feed my two about 700mg a day each... I like to keep l-lysine in their bodies as high and as stable as possible. Prevents tons of problems, but the biggest one is eye issues.

You can buy it online and at the vet. Online is cheap. Don't buy those specially for cats, they are expensive. Buy human grade in powder form, additive free. Dose 1/8th teaspoon at every meal, about 250mg dose. Mix into their wet food. I also like to mix into the dry, for added benefits.

Thanks for the reply rarepuss. I suspect that Princess is on heat as she has been yowling and meowing the whole night. Oscar just hisses and growls when he sees Princess. No fights so far. Perhaps Oscar is stressed as he's just been introduced to his new home.
