Every manufacturer should have a feeding suggestion on the can or bag.

You do not want to diet a cat rapidly, as it can cause health issues, so stick to 2% body weight loss per week max IMO.

If that is a 5.5oz can, it is highly unlikely that one can will be enough. It may seem a lot compared to a similar weight of kibble, but remember thats mostly water in that can (around 80%) which has no calories. I would wager you'd want to feed closer to two cans. Most cats will not be able to eat more than half a 5.5oz can without throwing up, so you will need to feed that many times a day, and a 1/4 can is a usual feeding size.

Does it have to be Hills though? Its prescription food, and kinda poopy ingredients if you ask me, and its not cheap either.

Oh ok, no if its for a medical reason, go ahead and feed it for the specified time.

I've had Bijou on a diet for a year now and he's lost 3+ pounds which my vet says is equal to 60 lbs in a human. Cats should not lose more than 1/2 pound per month or there could be a danger of liver failure.

I feed Bijou two 3 oz cans per day - one in the morning and one at dinner time with a small handful of a quality dry food for lunch. Bijou was 24.5 lbs and is now down to 20.7. He still has a ways to go but my vet said I'm doing it right.

You will probably have a cat crying for food for a little while until he gets used to the new feeding regimen.

Bijou will follow me around and if I go near where his food is stored he gets very vocal but I just say no!

So probably 1.5 cans (5.5 oz cans) would be good for your cat. He will adjust to the meal feeding and it is more appropriate for cats anyway IMHO. Is your cat going to be on the uti food forever? (If it's Hills c/d, cats can eat this as a maintenance food as it is meant to be one even though they market it as a urinary food). If he doesn't have to be on it forever, then when you choose a regular food, opt for a high protein, low carb canned food. EVO has a good reduced fat version.

Like the others have said, slow is better. Sometimes it feels like I lose weight just as slowly!

If your cat is overweight at 12 lbs, then one can (or possibly even less) will be enough.
Like Ducman said, you need to stick to 2% of less weight loss per week, so it's best to buy a baby scale in order to weigh them once or twice a week.

Switch him to a high protein, low carb food once you are done with the UTI food. Look for real meats as the first and second ingredients.
