Any reason why FIV+ cat w/ small foot wound can't get neutered?

A stray kitty showed up at my grandparents' house. He's a gorgeous flame point Siamese. I took him to the vet and he tested positive for FIV. He has a small wound on his foot, it's not deep and it's not all that bad, but the vet said that his foot should heal before he can be neutered. She didn't really explain this and I was too upset about the FIV+ status to think to ask about it. He is becoming very territorial and he needs to be neutered STAT. Does anyone know why the vet may have said this?

Maybe along the lines of he has one wound why create more on a cat who may be slower to heal. I would inform the vet that its getting bad and see if he brings any reasons up and if hed be willing to do it if you signed a waiver stating your aware of whatever his reason is(I have done it in the past for medical reasons on 2 cats)

That's what I was thinking, but since it's such a small wound I was thinking that there might be some other reason I couldn't think of. Thanks for your reply!

I'd ask the vet why they suggested this - if it's something they saw vs just his having tested positive for FIV. We TNR and last year had a cat test positive for FIV. He had a bite wound (probably the source of the FIV). Our vet neutered him, and lanced the abscessed bite wounds, treated it, and gave him a shot of convenia. I see no reason he shouldn't be neutered, but I'm not a vet and didn't examine the cat.

I have an FIV+ cat and he was neutered while recieving treatments for a massive skin infection, so don't see any immediate reason for it either. It might just be worry about possible infections if the cat had two wounds, but I don't know. I would definitely ask the reasoning.

i too think the vet is being overly cautious. i suppose complications are possible but assuming the wound is being treated properly and he's healthy otherwise, a neuter shouldn't be out of the question.
