So someine we know was selling their 3 yr old fridge and stove because they bought a new house and all the appliances stayed so there was no reason to keep their set.

Anyways we got a good deal on it, $550 for both. Like I said they are only 3 yrs old.

So we got them moved yesterday and well surprise surprise, the fridge isn't getting cold! Called the repair guy and he can only come look at it on Thursday, he asked me a bunch of questions and basically told me there must be a freon leak and it will cost $150....IF it's the freon.

This makes me sick to my stomach, thank god we shoved our old fridge into the corner and kept it plugged in so we didn't lose any of the food....

I've never ever had any luck buying stuff second hand....NEVER again. I know it's not their fault but it still sucks!!!

How did you move it? Did you lay it on its side during the move at all?

Turn it off. Let it sit for 24 hours. Then plug it back in. Oh, and clean the cooling fins under the refrigerator, while you're at it.

You probably don't want to know that we gave away our perfectly good refigerator, washer, and dryer when we replaced them. We just asked around amongst our acquaintances and found ones that needed them.

That's what we did with our older set (it was 10 yrs old) the stove is gone but the lady could only pick the fridge up on Wed so that's why we still have it, THANK god or we would have no place to put all the food!

Just get around the back or under the front (that kick panel under the door should come off). From the back works best.

However, if your friends say it was working before you bought it, I would still go with letting it sit for 24 hours, then re-trying it. You SHOULD be able to hear the compressor running.

And the fridge runs 24/7, it hasn't stopped (been plugged in for 24 hrs). The replair guy said that's because there's not enough freon in it so it will keep running because it can't reach the set temperature....

I did email my friend and this is what she said

No!!! We NEVER had any trouble with it!! Maybe its acting up from being stored, I'll ask Chris about it when he gets home, but we never had any problems at all! I'll get back to you this afternoon when he gets home.....now I feels like s@*t lol...you paid in advance, had to wait for it, now its giving you trouble URGH!!!..

Years ago, when we bought our new fridge, we put the old one in the basement. It sat there with the doors open for a few months and then I finally went down, cleaned it out, and plugged it in. Nothing. No compressor. Nothing. We had to take it to the dump. And it worked fine prior to that. I have no idea what happened. But it was so old that we didn't see the point in calling a repair person.

I'm glad you still had your old fridge there!

what a bummer but I am glad you have your old fridge to still use. I am sure you can get this one working fairly cheaply
. I wonder if storing it depleted the freon
. I really don't know, but am hoping you can get it in working order quickly and inexpensively!

How old is it?

It's possible that the seals dried out and let out the freon, but most refrigerators don't have seals. They're a closed system.

Again, I would turn it off for 24 hours or so and then restart it.

You DID turn the temperature down inside it, right? I'm sure you did, since you said it sounded like it was running.

Here's a pretty useful web site:

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Oh that sucks! I'm thinking it must have something to do with having been in storage.
At least you had your other fridge handy. When our fridge broke last month, we had to use bags and bags of ice to keep things cold. SUCH a nightmare. Of course ours is a special RV fridge that was a total PIA to find and replace.
But I feel your pain!

it's a quick and easy fix!

It's only 3 years old.

Ok so I was talking to my Mom and she asked if I plugged it in right away...well of course I did.

She said you are supposed to let them set for 24 hrs after moving it before plugging it in...EEEK!

So hopefully by tomorrow everything will be working again, I thought maybe I ruined it by plugging it in too soon since I wasn't supposed to but everyone is saying no it shouldn't hurt it, just leave it unplugged until tomorrow.

So cross your fingers, toes and everything in between that when we plug it in tomorrow everything works great for the fridge

Well it's all plugged back in and seems to be working, from what I've read it takes 12-24 hrs for it to reach the correct temps so I won't know for sure until tomorrow morning...

But I did peek in the freezer and I have a glass of water in there and after 2 hrs it is starting to freeze, so that must be a good sign....

More vibes for my fridge

Yah but you didn't tell me why
She explained why I was supposed to do it

Apparently even with water coolers, etc you're supposed to let them set...I've never done that, just plugged them in right away

Did you want a technical explanation of how the refrigerant can get in liquid form in places it's not supposed to be, even with a gentle move, and needs time for it to settle back in the reservoir? Or did you need a suggestion of what to do to make the refrigerator work?

I've found that the people on this forum have an unbelievable reservoir of good sense and experience and can make useful suggestions on almost anything.

Well the repair guy was here and it cost me $107.29.

The fan wasn't working so it couldn't blow the cold air down into the freezer since the freezer has been freezing stuff but the fridge was pretty much still at room temperature.

I also asked him about the settling in period for a fridge and he told me that was an old wives tale
