Hello all

there is this cat that has been around all summer, no one claims him, about maybe a year old if that, male. not fixed, sprays everywhere, If we did not have an indoor cat, I would get this fixed and keep him, very vocal, and lonely, wants attention, my wife just started putting food out, made him a bed on the porch, he is very aggresive towards other cats. how can i get him to a shelter, we can pet him, don't know about picking him up and putting him in my crate and taking him to the animal service league,, hate to see him get put down.. can't help how he is, and someone left the poor thing, winter will be here soon, and we cannot keep him.. thanks for any advice please

Aw this poor guy. Sounds like a lost pet or someone abandoned this guy
. First thing is that he needs to be neutered. This will stop the need for spraying and being territorial/cat aggressive. Does he have large cheeks/jowels? If so, he is older than just a year. Probably more like two or so. If he does not have the large tomcat jowels, then you are right, he is probably a young cat. I would really start calling all the no-kill shelters you can find, even if it means driving a distance. He sound very friendly and does deserve a home. The other option would be to get him TNRd (trap-neuter-release) but then you would have an outside cat permanently to care for and would have to build a winter shelter for him as well. If you do not want to take that responsibility on, then I would make the calls and try to place him somewhere, even in a foster situation. He really does sound like a sweet boy and wants a home.

thanks feralvr he is a nice cat, really young, about 7 lbs, anyway I am getting a hold of a no kill place, getting him neutered would be first, really don't want to leave him outside, busy streets around my place, someone just dumped him, early summer, he needs a home and we cannot keep him, wish we could. he wants to attack my cat.. he sure does let you know whe he sees you. walks around yelling.. like you said good boy, not his fault he has to fend for himself.. we will help him best we can.. plus he chases my neighbors cat and makes him fight.. he is an old girl does not need that.. here the fight every night.. I got run out and break them up.. thnaks again, keep you updated..

Neutering is necessary for stopping the fights. After neutering he may still be territorial, some are. But will not be so ferociusly fighting... And he will be much easier to make friends with for other cats.

If you are thinking about perhaps adopting him yourself - you probably can. (after vet check up, some quarantine etc),
but you must neuter him firstly, several weeks before you make any attempts of letting them meet.

As he is NOT fully adult tom, the hormones will go out quicker then in an old, territorial tom.
But you dont want to experiment on your boy

Otherwise, a home as alone cat is the least complicated at this moment.

Good luck!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Until you find some place that can take him, if you can find a low-cost (or free) spay/neuter clinic, you can borrow or rent a trap from a shelter or the vet, and get him neutered. This WILL stop the aggression, especially if he's young.

We rescued a 3-year old tom cat last year. We TNR (trap-neuter-return) feral cats, and care for a colony of them. This cat showed up, and was SO aggressive, he chased ALL the ferals away. We trapped him and had him neutered, but did not release him, because he was just too aggressive. It took three days for the feral cats to return. !!!!

We didn't know what to do with him. We called a foster network we work with. They said they'd take him when room opened up - but it could be a month or more. We live in an RV (and had seven cats at the time!!!). So we rented a trailer LOL, and stuck it next to us for him. After about a month, the foster network called to say they could take him. We took him to the vet to get tested for FIV/FeLV, and to get his distemper vaccine.

Well, he tested positive for FIV. The policy of the foster network was to put him down. So we picked him up and brought him back to his trailer LOL.

We decided there wasn't much to do other than figure out how to integrate him with our gang. So we started scent swapping. After a few weeks, we started bringing him over here for very short periods of time, which daily we lengthened by a little bit each time.

After about a month, we just never took him back to the trailer.

He is the sweetest, least aggressive kitty. He is best friends with one of our cats, and grooms him endlessly.

The point of this long story is... it is the hormones that are driving him crazy. He may be a VERY cat friendly cat, but the hormones are raging, and making him mark his territory and aggressively defend it. So while you work on finding him a shelter or foster situation - or even someone to just adopt him directly - it is SO worth trapping him and getting him neutered and vaccinated. It will make a shelter/foster/adopter than much more willing to take him, too.

Vibes for you and this kitty!

In fact, just did a quick search. You may find this website helpful: http://www.windyhillkittens.com/spayneuter.php

I need some advice please, he really was very aggrassive after other cats.. seams to me, he knows we helped him, and he is being a good boy, he is around 2 years old.. boy he has some big poop.. lol, do you think it is worth a shot, to try and keep him as a pet.. Congratz!! You have such a big heart!

I would start by doing scent swapping. Which means take his bed/blanket/whatever he sleeps on and switch it with something your cat sleeps on. This way they can get to know each other by smell. (Think like a pen-pal, lol.) Then place your cat in the basement, and Buddy upstairs. Let their 'territories' start to merge. Then put them in rooms next to each other, so they can hear/smell each other under a door. Then if you can open it a tiny crack, maybe let them see each other. Then if all looks safe, Buddy should be good to wander your house as he pleases.

Nice name there Minka, My cats name is Minca ,, anyway they are very used to each other's smell.. when I open the basement door.. its not like they want to get right in the rooms, this is Buddy's first night in the house, but he has been around awhile outside.when Buddy was outside and Minca was sitting at the door, full glass, that Buddy, would pound on it wanting to get her, she was laying on the back of the couch, with the window open, and Buddy jumped up 5 ft and ruined my screen, Do you really think he will change? This was just last week before he got neutered just yesterday.. it really worries me, he is very good with us.. he terrerized the other cats, just attack, I know he is fixed now,, But can they really change that much? thanks Again

Did he jumped up on the screen to attack Minca?? Or just mostly to meet her? or even play? (We had here a loong thread about cats who did play wrestled through the screen! Yes, the proper introduction later on went rather smoothly).
If you think he was eager to friendly meet her, it will go rather smooth and you dont need to wait so long. Mostly just the usual quarantine, say 2 weeks.
If you think he wanted attack - you must wait longer, not just the quarantine period, but till the hormones had left him. minimum Three weeks, perhaps even longer.
Her being a friendly female makes it a little easier... Otherwise I would say at least four weeks.

Shy toms are easier to get along with residents. They are submissive being on foreign, human dominated territory, and thus eager to please themselves in at least among the cats... so shy non territorial toms are almost as easy as shy females or neuters, to get OK with residents.

But him, being friendly to people AND territorial and quite aggressive with other cats, makes a difficult combination.
He WILL turn and be cat friendly, but it will take time. And thus, before you even think about anything, the hormones must go down, and he must forget some of his old behaviour. Otherwise, it is big risk he will beat up your resident, female or not.
So patience, and take it slowly then when it is time to begin.

Good luck!

I would go and get the cat ...... If you don't, then the other person might do something foolish with the cat, even put it outside or abandon Buddy. Obviously, Buddy is stressed out at this place and just because Buddy is peeing on the floor there does not mean he will do it back at your place. Of course, if he is sick with an UTI, then he will need to be treated and medicated. I know this will be a challenge for you
. How about using that large dog crate you mentioned and put it in the kitchen until he is over his cold. Or put him back where he was already comfortable in your house. I am sure Buddy is not happy where he is and Buddy knows this person doesn't really like him. Poor little guy
. Good luck and we are here to help you through this

p.s. Ointment is much harder to get in a cats eyes if they are fighting you, plus you could scratch the eye with the tip. They do make eye drops (Gentimicin is one type of medicine eye drops)

I talked him, the cat wants to go out, he has a cat door, and he did come back in after a couple hours, he lets him sleep with him, and trys different food, has not been eating either, he did that at our house too. when he was out ate a lot, then when we got him fixed, he ate good but not a lot, then he got fussy after a few days, we gave him some sheba. he liked that, the dry food not much, think things will get better, thanks.

This is good news then
. I really hope it works out for Buddy and maybe Buddy is out hunting during his outside jaunts and is not so hungry when he returns
. At least this person knows you care and if needed you would take the cat back. Let's just hope for the best and assume Buddy has a forever home now!!!!! PHEW!!!
