My 3 year old cat has been throwing up since morning. The first 2 times it was all of his food he had just eaten. 3rd time it was just bile looking. I have been keeping an eye on him and he was at his water fountain for a while and less than 10 minutes later he threw up just pure water(well not pure but you know what I mean). I saw him go back to the water fountain and again he threw up water. Just a few minutes ago he was sitting in his usual spot and started meowing really strange jumped down meowed sadly again and he vomited again just like a foamy watery substance. It was very little vomit though (like 2 tbsp) I know he has not coughed up a furball in over a month. He has that malt laxatone stuff but he really doesn't even like to take it anymore. I try to groom him (his hair is semi long) but he only lets me do it like for 5 minutes and then he gets very fidgety and I don't want him to get stressed.

He has been to the vet twice in the past 30 days. They had to do a sonogram because he has had struvite crystals and they sent out his urinalysis and sonogram findings to Texas A&M (the vet just wanted them to look at it this time around) and they called back saying that the reason he's got crystals is stress related (they had told us before it was possibly genetic) and he needs more moisture in his diet, drink more water and no stress. In the past month he has been defecating in front of my parents room (he is very attached to my mom) with a bloody stool. When they did the sono the vet even looked at his intestines and colon and said he didn't see any blockage. Could he be throwing up from stress?? Or is it the furball that has yet to surface?

Thanks

I'm wondering if he's developed IBD or food allergies (or a combo). Has he eaten anything different? Have you switched food or treats? Table scraps? Although none of this is necessary to trigger IBD or allergies.

I don't know how they can tell whether crystals are from a genetic thing or stress-related. Bladder inflammation can be from crystals or stress-related...

But a bloody stool is a red flag to me that something beyond stress is happening.
IBD can only be diagnosed via biopsy, though you can treat for it without the biopsy and monitor results. Normal treatment is with steroids (prednisone). I'm not sure what else.

We have a kitty with allergies. Because he's FIV+, we did not want to treat him with steroids (which further suppress the immune system). We searched the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association when our regular vets ran out of ideas on how to help him. We found a vet (a DVM) also trained in alternatives (acupuncture, chinese medicine, nutrition, chinese & western herbs.... ). Our boy was diagnosed with an "extreme spleen Qi deficiency" and an "extreme Yin deficiency." The herbals she put him on fixed him up and he's really healthy and doing just amazing now. If you want to seek a second opinion, you might want to see if there's a vet trained in alternatives that can take a look at your boy: http://www.ahvma.org

There are a number of TCS members with kitties with IBD, and antibiotics can really mess things up. Has he been on antibiotics or did you recently start him on antibiotics? And did the vet discuss with you a diet change to help control the crystals? What type of crystals were they (oxalate or struvite?). One member of TCS has had great success in controlling her kitty's IBD with the probiotic "Align" (available OTC at probably any pharmacy). (Specifically Align, not just any probiotic). Of course, don't do anything without consulting your vet.

BTW, I've learned that not being able to properly pass hairballs is "always" a form of spleen Qi deficiency and is pretty easily treated with chinese medicine approach. No need for vaseline or malt stuff. Just a thought.

We've told the vet about the bloody stool many times now. He doesn't have blood in it anymore(checked this morning) he's only pooped in front of my mom's door once this week. The times before it was like 5 out of 7 days. I asked the last time if it was obstipation (spelling?) but the vet kinda shook his head like nooo that's not it. When he did the sono he said there was no mass and the walls of the colon and intestine would really indicate if it was something going on there...

He's been on science diet s/d since March 2010 to insure he doesn't get a reoccurring UTI. The vet told us no more treats and we've never given any of our pets scraps ever.

I haven't seem him get into anything or found anything partly chewed. He's an indoors only cat. I use to make him cat grass and I haven't in like over a year. Maybe that would help with the furballs?? IBD... I'm not sure. He's not FIV+ and the time he got sick from the UTI in January 2010 they didn't notice anything on his levels. We've actually kinda been avoiding his vaccines/real checkup for like 6 months now bc of how stressed out he gets going to the vet and because he gets anaphylaxis from the combination of all the vaccines at once so we have to take him every 2 weeks to get all three shots done (so a month and a half until complete). The day we took him to get the sono I had to go the day before to get a sedative to give him before we went because 2 weeks before when they first attempted to do the sono he went ape s___ and started urinating and defecating on everyone and scratched them all really badly they didn't even get a chance to put him in the cat bag.

He's my first and only cat I've ever had and I just get all down on why my pets always have to be the ones sick and going through weird dilemmas when other people have a cat who lives until their 30 with no problems!

He hasn't gotten into anything that I know of. The foamy vomit has subsided. I'm just going to have to keep an eye on him before I call the vet.
