Hi all. I have a kitten almost a year old, we got her from a shelter and i have been battling roundworms with her since we got her. I have tried otc meds and meds from the vet. And yet another trip to vet this morning. I am at a loss at what to do. Has anyone had any experience with this issue of deworming over and over? I appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

What have you treated them with, and have you done it three times at 2 week intervals?

During that time, you should use a disposable cat litter (not scooping) and dispose of it on a daily basis.

Does the cat go outdoors? Do you have other cats?

No, she doesnt go outdoors. I have another cat who does not have them. I am sure of that, by checking with vet and as a precaution the vet gave her sister deworming meds and she had nothing. we do both at the same time and I only see the worms in Boots. Also boots does the usual coughing and thats a sign shes infected again.

Drontal feline is from the vet and otc brand are the meds. Maybe the dosage is too soon and the larve are not being killed? the dosage is 2 weeks apart and a total of 2 doses from the vet. I will be going to the vet this am to get more meds for her. But its frustrating after almost a year and shes not rid of them yet.

They check her stools and they say shes clean, but i dont believe the stool sample will show the larve. I am a clean freak when it comes to their litter boxes, daily when shes on meds of putting in new litter. Daily otherwise and weekly disinfecting.

You may want to ask for Revolution. It's a topical flea treatment, but it kills roundworms, too. Put it on both cats, twice, 30 days apart, and you should be done with it.

Your vet is old school. Many round worm are resistant to drontal, and I don't know of any vets around here that continue to use it for treatment of anything but tape worm. We had this issue when we first started rescuing in 2002.

Best is to get Revolution or Advantage Plus (for CAT). It is a topical. Apply it for at least three cycles three weeks between each treatment.

During the treatment, scoop frequently, and dump the litter and bleach the boxes weekly.

OTC treatments don't work, period. They only cause the cat to expel the live worms, then they step on them and just get reinfested. Also, any treatment only kills the adults (or larvae) but NOT the eggs. This is why the treatment must be given every three weeks - you have to account for the life cycle of the worms.

I'd treat your other cat for them just in case. You don't have to be able to see them for there to be worms. We only broke the cycle when we treated all the cats.

Our last kitty rescue was last year - he made 8. We treated him for three cycles of round worm. When they showed up again after several months (all of our cats are indoor only), we treated all 8 of our cats for three cycles three weeks apart with Revolution.
