Dew Claws

I've always been curious about this. I have a cat who doesn't have any dew claws on his front feet. He never had them. He has these little flaps where the claws should be, but there's never been any actual claw. Is this common and what could've caused it? I've never noticed it in any other cats.

Where did you get your kitty from? Is it possible this kitty was declawed (had the claws surgically removed)?

If the rest of his toes aren't de-clawed, I would suspect his breeder removed the dewclaws at birth like some dog breeders do. Which is silly for cats. . .they need those claws to climb properly. But if the little flap is there, that would indicate to me that this isn't a natural thing.
