Bert and Ernie may get married on Sesame Street?

Honestly, you wanna get married, go for it. However, I think this story being headline news on my TV this morning is a little much. My kids thought it was one of the funniest things they'd heard, not because the puppets are both boys, but because it came right BEFORE the Newsweek cover shot story.

If we're looking for equality, why does Bert and Ernie's nuptials make the news, when nobody talked about Miss Piggy and Kermit?

Ehhh, on one hand it's good for children who have two mommies or two daddies to see that their life is represented on TV and thus "normal"...

... but on the other hand, it's a kid's show, and not really an appropriate avenue for political statements- and that's kind of what it seems like to me.

Eh, it's just a petition. Anybody can make a petition, it doesn't mean anything. I don't think Sesame Street will ever actually do that.

Wait....they're brothers, right? Or am I laboring under some 1970s induced delusion? LOL
post #5 of 27
Not brothers, AFAIK. They're roommates; I think they were supposed to be the Sesame Street version of The Odd Couple. Back when 2 guys could be roommates to save on rent without everyone assuming they really are a couple!

True. I used to love Sesame street, and never thought it was weird that they were roommates. Bert and his OCD and his pigeons. Loved that.

Personally, my kids no longer watch the show, but my oldest son said they should do something like that simply so little kids don't grow up thinking it's anything but the norm. I don't think any relationship belongs on a preschool show, but I'm proud of him anyway.

He's a smart, sensitive kid.

Oh my word, they will be sharing a bed next or kissing each other goodnight. x

We live in a world that is no longer exclusive to man/woman couples. Children are being raised by two same sex parents and IMO, children should be exposed to many different family types. Then again I am quite open minded and have always taught my daughter that you have to be yourself no matter what. Gay, straight, bi, lesbian..it is who you are and people should never be ashamed of that.
Now I cannot seriously believe Sesame Street will go to this length, but Bert and Ernie have made me wonder for years

They've shared a bed ever since I can remember, and I grew up watching it.

Bert and Ernie have twin beds, like Lucy and Ricky. They share an apartment.

I always assumed they were a gay couple by the way they talk to each other and argue, sleep together, and never have a girlfriend.

Personally, I prefer my sesame street innocent and fun, and not a platform for controversial political statements. There are plenty of avenues for that.

I agree. I am all for doing all that we can to raise children without preconceptions or even bigotry towards groups that are different from them and their family. I also want small children to have an innocent childhood. Maybe I am too old at 55 and want something for small children that is no longer possible.

I saw this story and I wanted to cry. Sesame Street is a wonderful kids show that makes learning things like numbers and letters and phonics fun.

Yes, I know they have made quaasi-political statements before but those were always in keeping with the idea that everyone can be friends, no matter how different you are!

Bert & Ernie getting married is a political statement that will make a good portion of the population no longer allow their children to watch this fabulous program. That's no good.

I am almost 40 and I always remember them in twin beds in the same room. Like the Odd Couple or Lucy & Ricky.

If the gay community wants to use Bert & Ernie to show their kids that it's normal and go on the assumption that they are gay - more power to them! Sesame Street's official position is that they are "Best Friends" but obviously couples should be BFFs too.

Yeah, I'm SURE they have twin beds...

You know...I'm wondering if this is some sort of spoof from a right-wing group? It sounds like something one wing or the other would do, just to stir things up, and since there's so much talk about defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, this is just the sort of thing to fire up the opponents of that funding.

Ah...I see in reading the actual article, it's a petition from a supposedly left-wing group to try to force the issue on Sesame Street.

I'm still skeptical.

I'm still wondering where Lucy and Ricky got Little Ricky.

I know, right? I used to wonder if they moved the beds together or if they "visited". LOL what a weirdo...

I think it is just too ridiculous to be even close to true.

Sesame Street's offical position is that Bert and Ernie aren't gay, and they aren't straight---they're puppets, for pete's sake:

“Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppetsâ„¢ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.â€

Which is exactly the position a show for pre-school children should take; good for them

That's almost exactly what I would have said, had anyone approached me with a petition either way on this deal.

I'm still suspicious about pot stirrers being at the bottom of it.

This is right in there with the hubbub about the Teletubbies, isn't it?

Some people just need to get a life.

This! I'm bisexual, so obviously not even remotely offended by homosexuality or gay marriage ; that aspect is a non-issue to me, but I'd be annoyed and eyerolling if they did this (which they never will, but in theory) OR if they had a male puppet and female puppet get married, not because it would represent some kind of imagined "agenda", but because it's just not an educational topic for pre-schoolers, and that's the purpose of the show, not the puppets' romantic relationships. How silly.
