I am torn.

I have one vet (whom I like and who is closer to me) and she gives kitten vaccines for a great price. However, she does the combo vaccine and it INCLUDES FeLv. I called my other vet (much further away and much more expensive) and they said this was not acceptable and they had never heard of a vaccine that combined FeLv with everything else.

With 6 cats - 4 of which have had to have procedures done recently, and one dog that needs to have his teeth cleaned, vaccines, and has allergies that need daily meds and treatment, I need to save as much money as possible. Can anyone tell me if they have heard of an all in one vaccine with leukemia included? Or give me any cautions you might have?

It is so much appreciated!

Rebecca

I have heard of the vaccine. I wouldn't use it but I know it exists (I'm sort of suspicious of a vet who doesn't know that).

Have you asked the cheaper vet if she'd use a combo without FeLV for your kitty? I'm sure she has some around, or could order some.

Why would you not want to use it...if you don't care to share?

Oh...and it was the receptionist was the one at the other vet who had "never heard of it." Sorry I didn't make that clear in the first post.

Because the FeLV vaccine has a lot of side effects and shouldn't be given unless absolutely necessary. . .does your kitten go outside? If not, I wouldn't recommend it at all. And if you do give it, it would be better if you gave it separately from the other vaccines--the more vaccines given at once, the higher the chance for a bad reaction. But if you're inclined to give your cats the FeLV vaccine, and at the same time as the others, there's no difference between giving it in one shot or two.

Gotcha. I do give my two indoor/outdoor cats the FeLv vaccine. They have done well with it. Juno does not need it because she will be inside once she gets over the shelter sniffles.

You should really just go for the combo. Most of the side effects of vaccines are rare, go away, and having that virus in the future is much worse for ur cat. The companies that make vaccines are held reliable for their efficacy. The vaccine wouldn't be legal at all if it wasn't safe and healthy for your cat.
