My scaredy boy, Casper, is a real pip when it comes to trimming his claws. He is ok once we are able to actually catch him, but it is very traumatizing for him in general. ( he is scared of my boyfriend.
)
I have noticed now the last two times I have trimmed his nails that one of the claws on his front left paw seems to be deforming... it was always a little thicker than the others... but it is kind of bowing upward; it's thick (tall) and there is not much clearance between the interior edge of the claw and the pawpad. It grows into the pad and Cass has a few little skin tags there from irritation.
The others seem to be fine and run the gamut from a little bit thick to normal "fish hook" shape.
I am taking him to the vet next week. He does need his annual (nervous as this is a new vet, too.)
Has anyone else had this kind of issue with a claw? I don't want to have to remove it... I am hoping there is some way to file it down and perhaps retrain it to grow more properly.
Also - It doesn't seem to bother him; he is not limping... and he seems to be able to retract it.. .but not that well given its size and shape.
