My son very angry with Ichi

My son likes cats but last night his leg got sprayed for the second time by one of my boys - Ichi. I think it is because Buddy keeps on rubbing himself on my son's legs and Ichi does not like Buddy. I read that when cats rub themselves on you is like they're "claiming" ownership. So what Ichi did is normal. He smelled Buddy on my son and just "erased" the scent by spraying.
My son said cats should not spray on humans so he is upset and does not want to see Ichi at all.
What do you think?

Oops wrong name in thread title. I MEAN ICHI

The first question I would ask is if the cat is neutered.

Uh yeah its not cool to be sprayed. If the cat isn't fixed, get that done yesterday.

Me, too. If not, how soon can you get him in?

While spraying is a natural intact feline activity, it is unhealthy and unsanitary when done regularly inside our homes. If I were your son, I'd be upset, too.

I hate to do this since I think you rock, but as Ducman69 says if the male cats are not neutered that needs to be done ASAP.

Now if the male cats are fixed, then I have many behavioral suggestions. But before I go into that please let me know what your son touched or was near before the incident. Yes, this is important and sorry if you now think I am nuts . The rest of you think I am nuts already but I will live .

This is serious, if they aren't neutered/spayed, they all need to be ASAP! It could also be signs of urinary infection.....

For what I know of yayi, her cats are all spayed and neutered.... especially since they are all inside and outside cats.... At least that's what she advocates in here - I think she would neuter her own kitties
yayi, I would take this kitty to the vet to get him checked for an UTI

Jamie is living proof that some neutered cats will spray. He does it outside every day (perimeter of the yard) and will mark the cellar (ground floor) windows if another cat gets too close to them, despite having been neutered at 6 months. He didn't start the behavior till he was over 3, and another cat was spraying on our property.

Ichi could very well be covering Buddy's scent, but your son's anger is perfectly understandable.

Oh yes, my cats are spayed and neutered. Btw, spraying happens even if they're fixed.
Ichi did have an infection about two months ago. It was treated with antibiotics. Is it possible the infection was not totally eradicated?
Ichi is one of my most active cat. He has a good appetite and is a lap cat (tends to still suck when held). He dislikes Buddy but can't bring himself to challenge him so gets upset when he sees Buddy. When the spraying occurred on both occasions, I was seated right next to my son, Buddy was behind him and Ichi between us on the floor. Guess Ichi got more nervous than usual.

I hope your son forgives Ichi

I have a spayed six year old female cat named Shadow who sprays outside like a Tomcat. She sprays: fences, my deck, cars (tire's) and doors. But NEVER inside THANK GOD!

Spraying is often a "behavioral issue". The reason for the quotes is that this is a normal thing for all cats (domestic, hybrid and wild) to do. But we humans often forget that. Not that a spraying cat inside your home is something to ignore.

Also spraying is a marking behavior as many of you know. It is like labeling something as "mine". It is not normally a clue/cue the animal is ill. Like many people I have met/forum members seem to think.

Now onto Ichi, I would assume that the infection is cleared up. IF he has had no issues in the past two months other then this one I would guess he is medically fine. If you are worried I would seek a consultation with a licensed veterinarian that you trust .

However from what you you posted it sounds like Ichi was "upset" with the other cat near your son. So he marked your son as his "procession". Just as Ichi would have done a wall, tree etc.

Please tell your son my cat Shadow will spray me if she smells an unfamiliar cat or dog on my clothes ! So tell him he can be upset but he sure is not the only person who has had it happen.

Yes before you ask whenever I touch another animal that Shadow is not familiar with I ever let her smell me outside or change clothes before I see/touch her .

Lastly yes that is my favorite/. cat as weird as it sounds.

Since Ichi had an infection 2 months ago, the very first thing I would do is to go to the vet - I would have that cleared before assuming anything behavioral. Not only the infection might not have cleared, but the most critical time for flare up is within the first three months - it is not unusual for a flare up to happen on those first months at all....
When Bugsy had his UTI, my vet actually told me to watch him like a hawk for the first few months as a flare happens often - and he would only be "out of the woods" and considered clear of the issue after this period.
So, IMHO, before looking for something else, given his personal history, that's what I would recommend you to do.... With a urinalysis and a culture, of course...
Then if he is clear, I would look into behavior - jealousy, strays around your house, etc. It might be good if you can to go out at night with an UV light and see if the outside walls of your house are sprayed....

Spraying is often different than not using the litter box, but IMO it's always best to play it safe and rule out anything medical first. A number of people recently here at TCS thought their kitties had behavior problems that turned out to be medical problems, and their kitties suffered for up to several months before they solved the problem by going to the vet. So especially because he did have a UTI, it's best to make sure it isn't back first.

Hemmy once peed on me when he had an infection. That's the only time I've ever hit my husband. He hit the cat and I reacted. I knew the cat was ill. He had a history of UTI's. My husband didn't understand what was going on and I had to put myself between him and the cat. Happily, we're still married!

Thank you very much!

Ichi runs away from my son

Thank you all for your replies! Will certainly have Ichi rechecked by the vet. Although I still think it's a behavior issue.

Just for safety.... not something you want to play with...
Has he done it again? Hope not - at least now he is running away from him instead of spraying his leg

Was Ichi's infection a UTI? Can you give us a little more detail on what happened, what diagnosis, what meds he was on, and how long.....

Just to update you all - Ichi had ear mites. I am not sure if this could be the cause of his spraying on my son's leg but the mites are gone. Ichi still dislikes Buddy and even though my son has forgiven him and pets him - Ichi will leave once Buddy goes to my son.

Cats do things for reasons only cats know sometimes. In other words we may not always know why a cat does something, in this case spraying. I am glad that Ichi is not spraying your son.

I would not worry if Ichi does not stay near your son when the other cat Buddy comes near him. It is fine if the cats have worked out "sharing" this way. Happy cats and a spray free human . All sounds good now .
