In my experience I've found females to be more affectionate and lap cats. the males were all about sleeping in my lap and asking to be held when they were little but when they grew up, they became more independent. i guess they got upset when i neutered them.
I also had the problem with the guys spraying even after they were fixed. I only have females now, as I live in rented homes and I'm always afraid I would have to pay for the damage if the cats sprayed. when I visit my friend who works at the local animal shelter it breaks my heart to see all the male cats up for adoption. We always have about 80% male and 20% females up for adoption. I dont know if its because the litters have more males to females or if its because people are giving up males more often than females.
