Could This Be Urinary Tract Infection

Hello,

We have two cats, one is about 2 years old and the other is about 1 year old. In the time that we have had them, we have discovered urine on a futon (same place everytime) 4 times. We aren't sure which cat it is, or if it is both of them. The incidents have usually been a couple months away from each other, but the last two have been a couple weeks apart.

My theory is that if it was a Urinary Tract Infection, this would happen much more often, rather than with months or weeks in between. I believe that it is a behavioral problem, related to us not cleaning the litter boxes often enough or the fact that we have noticed that both cats are territorial about the boxes (although they aren't territorial about anything else).

Should I take them in to get them tested for Urinary Tract Infections, or is it safe to say that this is not the case since they are so intermittant?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Have you tried keeping the boxes very clean and adding extra boxes? (number of cats + 1, so for 2 cats you would have 3 boxes, for example).
Sounds to me that would be very first thing to do?

How are you cleaning these spots - enzyme cleaner? Which cleaner?
Are your boxes covered, uncovered, and where are they located? What type of litter are you using?

I'm with Carolina (and also advise trying at least one new box with Cat Attract litter along with two boxes with your regular litter, cleaned religiously) - and keeping track for a day or two.

While it never hurts to get a vet check, I'm kind of thinking they may not be happy about the litter box situation. When they are peeing in the box, are the clumps the same size as usual? That said, if you notice them hopping in and out of the box, little clumps, or being in the box with no resulting pee - RUN to the vet - or e-vet if you have to. Good luck - I've been there.
