Are my gloves annoying him?

Hi. Let me just say first, that I read the sticky thread up there, so I know that to begin with, I've been making some bad moves with my cat here. I also couldn't find your guys' cursing policy. For now, I'll just bleep myself out

So, I have this cat, Walter. Really, my mom brought her to this apartment from Florida, she originally found him in a cage, abandoned outside a supermarket. So y'know, she brought him in, etc etc, and now he's here. He's really not supposed to be here, but he is anyway, and because he's not supposed to be here, he's indoors 24/7. He's a really good cat when he isn't an evil little soccer hooligan. I don't know how old he is, as of course we found him, but he's gotten bigger since being here, but obviously still very young.

So anyway, he'll attack us. Basically, it's clear that he wants to play...or he'll get annoyed if we leave, and don't take him with. He'll attack us, attack furniture, whatever. So y'know, I've been teaching him how to fetch, been trying to find a way to spend that energy of his, right? Mostly, we've been successful, but he'll still attack our feet/hands/etc. I think in his mind it's a loving action, but he doesn't realize that humans don't have enough fur and fat to shrug off those claws. I also don't try to take any violent route with him, but there have been times where he actually finds, like, my achilles tendon, and as my entire lower body explodes in pain I just need to kick or throw him off of me. I'm always worried that I'll either hurt him, or make him afraid of me, but he's shockingly cool with it. Do you guys think he knows that it's nothing personal?

That's not the real question, though. I have these giant, thick black gloves, and I figured, "Oh, I can wear these and play with him, and not have accordion fingers after!" But here's the thing...when he attacks our feet or hands, or claws up our back, or any of the billions of evil things...he's still innocent about it. If we make a noise or something, or even just express pain, he'll hold off. Even if he keeps going, it's playful. But man, when I wore these gloves...

This is the important part of the post. Pay attention.

When I wear the gloves, and offer my hand...he'll murrrder my hand, treat it like his worst enemy, basically attacks it much much worse than he'd ever attack my bare hand. I even tested it out, taking the gloves off after, and he didn't attack them, like he did my gloves.

So, I've done this 2 times, and at first I figured he knew the difference between "safety glove" and "bare hand"...but is he reacting to my glove because he's afraid of it, or something? That's actually why I joined this site, to ask. His tail was going every which way after playing...but he pretty much does that after he plays anything. I'm not sure it's a sign of his being annoyed, unless he's always annoyed. Anyway, I'm sorry for this horrible rambling, was just trying to give everything relevant, y'know? Anyway, you guys are, y'know, big cat guys, what do you think is going on?

Sounds like you have a young, playful cat. You might get a laser light to help him expend his energy, you'll be amazed.

As for attacking your hand with the glove, let me just forewarn you, do NOT encourage kitty to attack or play with your hands. You will want to break this behavior ASAP. When he bites your hand, pull it away and say 'ouch' and then redirect kitty to something more entertaining, like the laser light.

He sounds like a cutie.

Yeah, I found that out reading stuff on this site, thank you. I was just wondering if the gloves were freaking him out, or if he understood that he could go crazy on them.

First, I haven't found a swearing policy either, but most people here seem to keep it fairly clean. There is a "censored" emoticon which might be useful. Maybe just try to tone it down a touch out of respect.

That aside, You really need to interact with the cat with toys that are not attached to you, so to speak. Wand toys like Da Bird are perfect. The laser pointer may be a good idea too since you can run it all over the room and really wear him out.

Also, is he neutered? Has he been to the vet for a good check up?

Kicking or throwing him is one sure way to make him scared of you

Get him a playmate, problem solved

PS never, ever play with your hands, or gloves, or any part of your body with him. they'll learn and you will always be watching your back for them to attack... bad idea.

I'd play with him with wands and as someone mentioned "Da Bird". even the "Cat Dancer" toy. he'd pounce and attack the toy, and not your hands. This is a great way to redirect your cat's attention from your body to the toy instead.

The gloves MIGHT be scaring him. He might also think its a mouse or something to attack and destroy, not realizing its only your hand inside.

He could also be reacting to the smell of the gloves.
But in any case, cats will assume that it's okay to play with/play bite your hands with or without gloves; they don't know the difference. So at all costs, avoid playing with your cat with your hands.
For a cheap toy, tie almost anything soft/furry on the end of a shoe string and drag the shoe string behind you when walking. Cat will chase it.

Anyway, thanks for the help, vatos. Linked my mom to the big "here's why he's attacking" you thread that's stickied.
