new home for my adult cats

I have just moved into a new place, and decided that since there is a huge dog living here, I would bring them in and put them in the basement. Well, it has been 24 hours and they still have not come out of the dark crevices they have found for themselves. They haven't eaten or anything. I know they need time, but when should I worry? And should I force them to mingle with the dog (who is friendly)?

A lot depends on the cat. When I moved to Knoxville, Google was immediately out exploring wanting to discover new things.... Joey wouldnt come out of the closet to do more than potty for the weekend, and then when he finally did start to venture out he would dash back in the closet if he heard even the smallest noise. We just made sure he had food where he felt safest and a litter box near by. But they adjusted, it took Google about a week and Joey about a month to get completely comfortable.
mine however adjust to dogs very quickly as we have friends who bring their dogs with them every time they come over. At first it freaked the cats out (Joey moreso... Google figured out the dogs are terrified of him and now he torments them....) but now they just kind of look at the dog and dont really pay attention.

Thanks so much for your response. . Yesterday afternoon, Phillip finally came out when I called him to accept some treats. I noticed some of the food had been eaten, and someone had used the litter. . Isn't it funny how you know which kitty will be the brave one?

I would not worry about it for at least 96 hours (four days).

Glad all is going well . Are they at least coming out to eat, drink, use the litter box on a daily basis?

Yup! I have since gotten them to come upstairs and do some exploring while the dog is outside.. they seem to be comfortable here. I held Terrance one time and brought him to say hi to the dog. The dog was so nice and just sat there. Terrance tensed up, but didn't spaz. He took off when I put him down, though. So my only challenge now is to get the dog and cats to coexist.
