When inserting a metal knife into a cake to see if it is done, and finding out it is not, do NOT immediately place said knife in your mouth to lick off the very yummy (but VERY hot) batter! OUCH!!!!

I did this saturday afternoon and it still hurts. Of course, it was a very "me" thing to do. I swear, I don't know how I survived 41 years .

Ouch!! I've done stuff like that before. I'm forever burning or cutting myself in the kitchen. Just yesterday I was cutting a piece off an onion with a paring knife, cutting TOWARDS me, and I even thought, "I'm so gonna get my thumb with this." And sure enough I did, but I was cutting slowly enough so I didn't actually cut through more than the top layer or so of skin. Sheesh.

LOL!!! This is totally something I would do

Hope the cake ended up delicious in the end regardless

Yeah, when I was putting the knife in my mouth part of my brain thought "this is really NOT a good idea", but the other part thought "mmmmm...chocolate" One of these days I'll learn.

My mom used to cut onions like that, holding it in the palm of her hand and slicing towards her. She could dice a whole onion in 30 seconds. I tried it....once. The knife cut through the meaty part below the thumb. I still have the scar. Now, it's a cutting board for me.

Actually, it was delicious...what I could taste of it . And yes, I did use a new knife when I tested it the next time.

I use toothpicks to check if cakes are done and they don't burn.

Sorry you burned yourself - but at least you HAVE that thought that says, "this is really NOT a good idea." !!!! Gary just doesn't have that "switch." He loves to cook and bake and is GREAT at it. But he is forever reaching into the oven without a mit (!!!!) - or looking at boiling water boil, and says, "I wonder if this is really boiling?" And sticks his FINGER in it.

We used to cook for clients (biz clients, weekend things, just for fun), and they found this to be a source of endless entertainment.

I HAVE done that before! A few months ago I started pre-heating the oven and had everything ready to go in, opened the door, to find a cookie sheet I stuck in there that I forgot about (just to get it out of the way). Without thinking I grabbed the cookie sheet (now 350 degrees) with my bare hand. I guess in my mind, "if nothing was on it, it shouldn't be hot"

This is the best way but I have NO idea where I stuck the toothpicks. Probably someplace where "I know where they will be". At what age does senility kick in?

Oh yeah, my mom bought me TWO Ove Gloves a few Xmases ago, and not too long ago I still managed to burn myself- bumped my arm on the oven, just barely past where the glove ended. Even though I still managed to burn myself that time, I highly recommend these things. I'm sure they've saved my hands from numerous scars.

Now I just need those chain mail looking butchers gloves to keep my hands safe from knives...

I've done that, too! Not sticking my finger in boiling water, but I have reached into the oven without mitts and tried to pick up a hot pan or cookie sheet. That hurts, darn it!

calico2222, glad the cake was yummy!

Erica, I am constantly slicing myself with knives. You'd think I'd get it by now, but no...I keep doing it. My poor thumbs. And I tend to slice the tip of my fingernails off, too. I am so bad with knives.

A note of seriousness.....Years ago, one of my then co-worker's wife was cutting corn off the cob for canning. She knew the proper way to cut, but she was in a hurry. She was cutting toward herself. And yes, she sliced into her arm....big time. I forget how many stitches she needed to close the wound. It was nasty. To make matters worse, the arm got badly infected and, after numerous operations to remove more and more of her arm, she eventually had to have her entire left arm amputated up to her shoulder. It was that bad.

So be careful when you're using knives!
